The new-generation 2020 Subaru Outback is coming. When will customers be able to get their hands on one?

Subaru introduced the all-new 2020 Outback SUV/Crossover earlier this year when it was unveiled at the New York Auto Show on April 17. It’s coming with lots of upgrades customers have been waiting for. When will the new models begin showing up at the dealer showrooms?

The Outback is produced here in the U.S. along with the new Ascent 3-Row, Legacy sedan, and Impreza compact at the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana by Subaru Indiana Automotive (SIA). They are expected to begin production of the all-new 2020 Outback and 2020 Legacy at the end of July. So dealer shipments should begin shortly after and vehicles should arrive in showrooms early August.

Customers who want one can put in an order now if you want a specific color or trim package. Outback will come in popular colors like Wilderness Green Metallic and Tungsten Metallic, but don’t expect Tangerine Orange. Customers can get Outback in Base, Premium, Limited, Touring, and the new Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT and Touring XT models with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine.

New Upgrades

Here’s are a few of the upgrades coming on the new Outback SUV/Crossover for the 2020 model year. It gets the new Subaru Global Platform that will improve driving dynamics, interior room, and should reduce cabin noise. The new 2.4-liter turbo engine is big news as Outback gets the Ascent-sourced FA24 turbocharged powerplant. Subaru says it will get around 23/30 mpg city/highway with the turbo. EPA estimates have not yet been released for the 2020 model year.

Other upgrades include standard EyeSight driver assist that will include a new Lane Centering Function. The new function provides steering assist when the vehicle veers outside its lane, helping the driver maintain a direct path. Outback also gets the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System that made its debut on the new 2019 Forester.

Torque News expects to get our hands on the new 2020 Subaru Outback at the end of July and we should have our first drive review for you then. Stay tuned.

I was told by a gent at Subaru that the Outback will also have Stop-Start. This will improve mileage slightly above published projections. I also asked for some youthful colors. No answer yet. If Mercedes can have bright red, why not Subaru?

I understood that the stop-start feature was only on the standard models, and not the XT. That's what I was told by a salesman at my local dealer anyway.
