The Honda brand is riding its small SUVs to success. See what small Honda SUV gets hot and beats the popular Pilot in October.
Honda is riding their SUVs to new records as customers bought more compact 2019 HR-V models than the popular Honda Pilot SUV in October. The new Honda CR-V is still the number one SUV in the Honda stable, but the unlikely smaller HR-V saw incredible sales with Honda delivering 10,130 models in October compared with 4,961 in the same time period last year.
The Honda HR-V set a new all-time monthly record and smashes the previous number with sales over 10,000 units and a 96.6 percent increase. The popular Pilot 3-Row SUV dropped in sales (-31.9 percent) with Honda delivering 9,529 in October compared with 13,479 in the same time period last year. The Pilot is still the number four selling Honda vehicle (113,498 through October) but HR-V (80,444) isn’t too far behind and almost catching up with the Odyssey (82,130).
Why is the HR-V so hot?
The Honda HR-V is catching on with a new generation of Honda buyers because it’s fuel-efficient, offers utility, and it does offer the all-weather capability. The small SUV comes standard with 2WD and all-wheel-drive is available. It has a starting price of $20,620 and is an EPA rated 28/34 city/highway mpg on 2WD models and 27/31/29 for AWD models. HR-V comes in 5 trim levels, LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and top-of-the-lineup Touring trim.
How does the Honda HR-V compare with Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota C-HR? In sales, the Honda HR-V is behind the hot-selling Subaru Crosstrek delivering a record 12,137 units to customers in October. The Toyota C-HR is a distant third with 3,900 units sold last month.
Subaru has sold 110,634 Crosstrek compact SUVs year-to-date, Honda has moved 80,444 off its lots and Toyota has sold only 41,677 C-HR models this year. We think the Honda HR-V is underpowered compared with Crosstrek. The small Subaru SUV is powered by a 2.0-liter Boxer engine producing 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. All HR-V trims are powered by a 1.8-liter engine producing 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque.
Stay tuned as we will bring you a complete comparison of the 2019 Honda HR-V vs the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek. Both should be on your compact SUV shopping list.

Another difference between
Another difference between the Honda and Subaru is the recalls. The Subaru will have nearly endless recalls to correct factory defects, the Honda won't.
You're right, I don't believe
You're right, I don't believe it. The HR-V is plenty lackluster, and about the best part is you can get it with AWD, unlike the Nissan Kicks, and Toyota CH-R that are FWD only. At least in Europe, there is an option for the 1.5T engine that we don't have. Not sure why the sales are going up for it, many complain that the powertrain, and infotainment are both outdated.
