All garage mechanics can attest to experiencing it on a daily basis: Customers who lie about who did a repair fail on a car that is now in their garage to fix that fail.
"I just had it (repaired or serviced) at another garage, and I think they did something wrong," is the mantra mechanics often hear while trying to remain professional and wondering what fresh hell awaits them under the hood.
Why Car Repair Customers Often Lie
Car repair customers often lie about who performed a previous bad repair for several reasons―Most of which are embarrassment-related when they or a family member did the service and repair and did not know what they were doing…and do not want you to know that is what really happened.

Other times, car repair customers lie because they are concerned the mechanic will charge them extra for repairing a failed fix, and/or they may have violated their car's warranty by admitting they had taken the car to a non-dealership garage.
In any case, it's human nature to fib (call it that, if you will) when faced with any quasi-paternal figure and not wanting to admit your guilty feelings. We do it all the time with our doctors and our dentists. And so it is with our mechanics. Like I said, it's human nature.
