The first production hybrid supercar designed and manufactured in the U.S. will wear the Acura brand. What are the possible “green” fuel-performance applications of NSX race-born technology?
Looking to NSX we find a performance car greater than it’s assembled parts. Sure, we’d love to fly around a road course safely at 150+ mph. But the fact is, for most Earthlings, the ability to purchase or lease a $100,000+ limited production Acura supercar doesn't reside within the restrictive limitations of the household budget; it just ain’t going to happen!
Acura’s Halo Car with a hybrid twist
2016 Acura NSX will put Honda back on the world-car performance list. Let’s face it, when most folks hit a financial sweet spot in life, one’s general concern for fuel economy and carbon footprint often falls to the wayside of comparative conservationism. In other words, my Acura NSX costs less to lease per month than your BMW i-8 and may squeeze a mile or two more out of a gallon of gasoline; therefore, it’s “somewhat practical.”
Apples to Oranges, both cars represent excessive consumerism in the form of a personal statement; “I’ve made it, and I can!” Nothing wrong with that, enjoy! That’s why we write automotive journalism; we love car, truck development and the technology found under the skin of the subject at hand.
When revealed to the world press in Detroit, NSX will be the first and only hybrid supercar designed and manufactured in North America. Acura through NSX will present home grown innovation and engineering to a world stage of stunning automotive rarity. And, as with previous NSX offerings, production will be low with purchase waiting lists long. With 100 employees working Honda’s least mechanized production line, NSX will be(mostly)hand crafted.
Our prediction for Honda/Acura hybrid performance
Although gasoline is currently priced at new millennium lows, Honda’s“ Blue Skies for Our Children” mantra lives on. Honda’s quest for a 30% carbon reduction(2000 level) by year 2022 is the real deal. The company will get there through internal combustion/electric motor hybrid technology. We further believe that within the next 3 years the price of gasoline will exceed $5 per gallon in much of the U.S. and Canada.
We predict that Honda and Acura division will expand the use of primary I.C. engine, slave electric motor and multiple clutch brake regenerative CVT or mechanized 8 and 9 speed transmission across the line. We find NSX hybrid-SH-AWD to be the most cost effective method of directing electric drive “torque vectoring” to superior traction and road handling while increasing torque and fuel efficiency.

Why light truck applications?
We believe that as the U.S. motorists transitions away from the internal combustion engine, hybrid propulsion technology is the next practical step in increasing city and highway fuel efficiency.Toyota's proved it.
