Almost 20 years ago, Volvo took a page out of Subaru's playbook: Take a wagon, raise the ride height, make changes to chassis and suspension, add all-wheel drive, and give it a name that tells everyone this isn't your ordinary wagon. The name chosen was Cross Country.
Since then, the V70 Cross Country has become an icon for the brand. But with the V90 taking the place of the V70 as the brand's flagship wagon, we knew that a new Cross Country was due. Today, Volvo rolled out the 2017 V90 Cross Country.
Starting with your standard V90 wagon, Volvo increased the ground clearance to 8.2 inches, added new bumpers and underbody protection, and equipped it with a set of off-road tires. Under the skin, the V90 Cross Country features modified versions of the power steering, all-wheel drive, and stability control to make the vehicle more capable in harsh conditions.
Volvo hasn't announced what engines will be available for the V90 Cross Country. It would be safe to assume that it would mirror the S90 with the T5, T6, and T8 plug-in hybrid.
Production of the V90 Cross Country will begin this fall. No word when the V90 Cross Country will arrive in the U.S.
