Rumors have been flying around for the past few months of Mercedes' AMG division working on a hypercar. It seems those rumors were true.

On the eve of the Paris Motor Show, Mercedes R&D chief Thomas Weber announced the existence of this vehicle.

“What would you do if you were looking for an AMG that has to redefine efficiency and performance? Tonight, I am happy to confirm [that] we are going to create an AMG performance hybrid featuring our Formula 1 drivetrain technology. [It will be] the most efficient and, at the same time, the best-performing and most spectacular AMG of all time. Some may even call it a hypercar,” said Weber.

Called the R50, it looks to be a prototype race car for the road according to a teaser sketch released by Mercedes. The sketch reveals a hood scoop and aerodynamic fin. Judging from the sketch, it looks like the R50 is directly aimed at the upcoming Aston Martin AM-RB 001.

According to Automobile Magazine, the R50 will use a road-going version of the 1.6L turbocharged V6 found in Mercedes' F1 race cars. The body will be made out of carbon fiber.

Mercedes says they will show the production version of the R50 next year, possibly at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
