If you were to ask Mercedes-Benz where it sees itself in the future, it would likely point you towards the concept that made its debut last week at the Paris Motor Show.
This is Generation EQ Concept and its a preview of not only a new model, but of a new sub-brand.
"The emission-free automobile is the future. And our new EQ brand goes far beyond electric vehicles. EQ stands for a comprehensive electric ecosystem of services, technologies and innovations," said Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
If elements of this vehicle seem familiar, that is mostly like due to a teaser video Mercedes released last week. Describing the design of the Generation EQ Concept can be summed up by saying 'a futuristic looking GLC-Class'. The front features a massive 'grille' with blue accent lighting and slim headlights. Along the side, there are no mirrors or door handles. This is to help with aerodynamics. Moving inside, there is seating for four people and a large 24-inch HD display providing all of the key details needed for the driver.
An electric motor mounted on each axle provides a total output of 400 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes says the Generation EQ hits 60 mph in under five seconds. A 70kW lithium-ion battery pack mounted under the floor provides a total range of 310 miles. Charging can be done by either plugging the vehicle into a high-speed “wallbox” or driving over an inductive floor charger.
As we mentioned towards the beginning, the Generation EQ Concept is also a preview of a new sub-brand called EQ. Mercedes plans on launching this brand within the next few years with an SUV being the first model - most likely a toned down version of the Generation EQ Concept. The concept also features a new modular platform that will be used on all EQ models.
