We'll be the first to admit we are jealous of the European auto marketplace for a number of reasons; wagons, hot hatches, Skoda vehicles! Now we have a new addition to this list, Mercedes-Benz Camper Vans.
Wait! Did you just type Mercedes-Benz Camper Vans?
Yes. Mercedes-Benz has been building camper vans for almost 40 years with Westfalia, a company you might remember building the camper versions of the Volkswagen Vanagon and Eurovan. For the past two years, the two have worked together to build a factory-backed pop-top Vito/V-class (aka Metris in North America) Marco Polo edition. This van features an integrated awning, small kitchen area, a rear seat that can convert into a bed, and an electric pop-up that provides additional sleeping space.
At the Caravan Salon trade show in Düsseldorf, Germany (this is a real thing), Mercedes will be showing three new variants of the Marco Polo that include distinctive design traits and features. The three variants are,
- Marco Polo EDITION: Adds a lot more equipment to the standard model such as 17-inch wheels, adaptive lights, and a parking package.
- Marco Polo ACTIVITY EDITION: Features detachable body panels, bumpers painted in the color of the body, and tinted glass. For the show, Mercedes will have the van pulling a trailer with a motocross bike.
- Marco Polo AMG Line: Comes with a number of AMG exterior pieces, 19-inch alloy wheels, a 15-millimeter drop for the suspension, and faux carbon-fiber trim.
But wait, there's more!
Mercedes is also showing their smallest van, the Citan with a rooftop tent done by 3DOG Camping. Their largest van, the Sprinter is also being done up for the show as it is a popular choice for camper builders.
"We are consequently continuing to press forward with our activities in the camper van market. The new Marco Polo and Marco Polo ACTIVITY edition models mean that we are now able to offer our customers a range of practical and comfortable extras at an attractive price. We are also very proud of the considerable interest shown by body and conversion specialists in our base vehicles. Once again we are able to show a range of new camper van solutions on our Mercedes-Benz stand," said Klaus Maier, Head of Marketing and Sales Mercedes-Benz Vans.
