Time for a pop quiz! How many models does the Volkswagen Group produce worldwide? This includes the all of the brands from Volkswagen to Bugatti. 90? 125? 175? Try 340 models.

Your eyes may have just popped out of your head with this amount of vehicles. German business paper Handelsblatt (Subscription Required) reports that Volkswagen is considering reducing the amount of models on offer from the various brands. This comes as part of the recently announced 'TOGETHER—Strategy 2025' we reported on last week.

"The total number of our today around 340 model variants, we are in the course of reducing," Volkswagen CEO Matthias Müller said at the press conference announcing "Strategy 2025".

Sources at the German company tell Handelsblatt the company is looking into ceasing production of over 40 models across their brand portfolio.

"A decision on how many models will be phased out or ceased has not been taken yet," said a Volkswagen spokesman to Reuters when asked for comment.

Any guesses as to possible models being cut?

A possible vehicle is the Volkswagen Beetle. As we reported back in April, sales of the model have declining for a few years. In 2015, the Beetle saw a drop in sales of 22.3 percent when compared to 2014. Our report at the time said the model could be canned in 2018 to make room for the next-generation Tiguan crossover at Volkswagen's Peubla, Mexico, factory.
