The 2021 Ram 1500 has the new safety equipment that earns it a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has adopted new and stricter safety standards. The 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab is the first pickup to earn the award under the stricter guidelines.
The 2021 Ram 1500 Crew Cab is equipped with Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking as well as adaptive LED projector headlights with high-beam assist. Those features helped the 2021 Ram 1500 qualify as the only pickup truck to earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
“The Ram 1500’s Top Safety Pick win affirms FCA’s longstanding commitment to robust engineering innovation as a means to serve our customers,” says Mike Koval Jr., Head of Ram Brand. “Such rigor helps us deliver on Ram’s unique combination of ruggedness, utility and refinement.”
The Insurance Institute requires that vehicles have some sort of Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking to be considered for a Top Safety Pick. That means that the vehicle has a system that will help detect pedestrians. If it appears that the vehicle will hit the person, it automatically applies the brakes to reduce or eliminate the possibility of impact. Ram’s pedestrian detection system received an advanced rating from the IIHS. It builds on the Ram’s overall Automatic Emergency Braking System.
2021 Ram 1500 Did Well on All IIHS Crash Tests
According to Ram, the 2021 Ram 1500 did extremely well on all of the IIHS crashworthiness tests. The 1500 got the highest possible ratings in all six tests, which is extremely difficult to do. The IIHS checks how the vehicle will react in three different types of front-end crashes. It then simulates side and rear impacts as well as what happens if the vehicle rolls over. According to Ram, “The Ram 1500 Crew Cab earned the highest possible score in each.” The Institute is checking to see how well the vehicle can detect potential impacts, how quickly the vehicle can stop and how well the vehicle protects the passengers.
The 2021 Ram 1500 has more than 100 available safety features. The Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking is offered as part of the Advances Safety Group Package. The package also includes features like Lane Departure Warnings, Rear Cross Path Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind-spot Monitoring with trailer coverage.
Safety features like the Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking can be very important for drivers who want the added protection. While nothing is foolproof, it’s like having an extra set of eyes watching for pedestrians who can dart out in front of your vehicle. If the driver doesn’t react quickly enough, the automatic system applies the brakes, in hopes of avoiding or eliminating the accident.
