Fiat Chrysler is recalling more than 700,000 of its popular Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos because of a potential problem with brake shields. The models were built from 2011-2014.
Fiat Chrysler is recalling more than 700,000 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos to fix a problem that may have been repaired incorrectly during a previous recall. Yes, they are recalling a previous recall. It turns out that dealers may have not fixed the brake shields correctly.
Incorrectly Installed Brake Shields
According to FCA, the company is voluntarily recalling the SUVs to inspect the brake-booster shields because they may have been installed incorrectly. The shields are supposed to prevent water from getting into the boosters. If the shields are installed incorrectly, water can cause corrosion and the brakes may malfunction.
Fiat Chrysler says it is aware of only one possible accident but is not aware of any injuries.
Fiat Chrysler says even if water gets into the brake, it should still function, but the brake pedal may be harder to push down.
Drivers could also get a warning light or see that their anti-locking brake system has activated. FCA says customers who have any of those issues should contact their dealers immediately.
The recall affects 646,394 vehicles in the U.S., 42,304 vehicles in Canada, and 21,139 in Mexico.
Fixing the Previous Fixes
These same vehicles were recalled years ago to fix the brake shields. Nearly 95 percent of those SUVs were serviced. However, FCA determined that many of the new shields were installed incorrectly.
FCA should be contacting all of the affected drivers. Service to fix the shields is not expected to be ready until the first part of November.
Again, this recall affects the 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokees and the Dodge Durangos. Customers with questions or concerns may call the FCA US Recall Information Center at (800)-853-1403.
