Lincoln unveiled its new baby Navigator at the New York Auto Show and it is aimed right at women and millennials. Lincoln has spent a lot of money upgrading the compact luxury SUV with female and younger buyers in mind.
Lincoln’s small luxury SUV has a new name and several new upgrades as it prepares to take on the heart of the crossover market. The 2020 Lincoln Corsair will land in showrooms this fall. The new little Lincoln will emphasize a quiet ride, built around comfort for the driver and passengers.
Small SUVs are the Fastest-Growing Luxury Market
The 2020 Lincoln Corsair is engineered to be quieter than other vehicles. A dual-wall dashboard separates the driver from the engine compartment. The additional sound-proofing reduces vibration and noise in the cabin, so you hear less road and engine noise.
“Entering the fastest-growing luxury segment, the all-new Corsair is artistically crafted, expertly designed and infused with our unwavering attention and commitment to detail; it’s unapologetically Lincoln,” says Joy Falotico, president, The Lincoln Motor Company. “Corsair’s addition to the portfolio means Lincoln now has a full family of SUVs to exceed the needs of our luxury clients.”
The 2020 Corsair will compete with European luxury small SUVs like the Mercedes GLC class and the BMW X3.
More Luxury, Less Noise
The 2020 Corsair follows many of the design cues from the popular Navigator and the all-new Aviator, due out later this year. Lincoln has upgraded the leather seats and interiors, emphasizing luxury and added convenience. The vehicles have a more fluid design that Lincoln refers to as “Sculpture in motion”.
As well as reducing the engine noise, Lincoln is making the other sounds in the cabin less harsh. Chimes replace the typical beeping alerts and alarms, similar to what will be found in the new Aviator.
More Customizable Technology
Women and millennials may also really appreciate that the new Lincoln Corsair will have loads of new customizable technology, including the Phone as a Key system. Drivers will be able to download the Lincoln Way app on their smartphones. The app will allow drivers to unlock, start and drive their car, all without a key fob. The driver can also do other things with the smartphone. They can lock the car, open the liftgate and even remotely start the car, all from their phone. Anyone who is uncomfortable with the Phone as a Key system can easily deactivate it.
The all-new 2020 Corsair also has the Lincoln Co-Pilot360 set of driver-assist technologies, like parking assist and collision avoidance. Plus, additional safety features are also available including lane centering technology, speed sign recognition, evasive steer assist helps avoid a collision with a slower or stopped vehicle ahead; it provides additional steering support when a collision cannot be avoided by braking alone, Reverse brake assist can help stop the vehicle when backing up if the rear sensors detect an obstacle.
More Convenience
When it comes to appealing to female buyers, the biggest thing that the Corsair has going for it is that it isn’t huge. The Navigator is Lincoln’s top seller. The MKC, that the Corsair will replace, is Lincoln’s 2nd best seller. Any woman who has driven the Navigator will tell you that while it is wonderful for hauling lots of passengers and their stuff, the interior can be a bit too roomy. The Corsair will be easier to park and navigate for anyone who doesn’t need all the extra room.
Another big convenience for women is that the Corsair will come with seats that can be adjusted 24 different ways, so you can change aspects that can be uncomfortable. Both the driver and the front passenger can set their seats for optimal comfort. Second row passengers will also have the ability to slide their seats back to optimize their legroom. No more complaining from the kids in the back that they are cramped. Lincoln claims that the rear seats will have more legroom than many larger SUVs.
Drivers have the choice of two turbocharged four-cylinder engines – a standard 2.0-liter with 250 horsepower and 275 lb.-ft. of torque and a 2.3-liter with 280 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. Each is paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission. The 2020 Corsair will be front-wheel-drive but you can upgrade to all-wheel-drive.
“Every piece of technology has been purposefully integrated to work with you on your journey,” says John Jraiche, Corsair chief engineer. “It’s orchestrated to make your trip effortless by providing a nimble, confident drive.”
At this point, Lincoln isn’t releasing fuel economy or price. The 2020 Corsair will be built at Louisville Assembly, the same plant that will build the all-new 2020 Ford Escape.
