Volkswagen is continuing a sales turnaround that began last year. The automaker is recovering from the Dieselgate scandal and has seen month-to-month and year-to-year sales increases consistently.
Volkswagen’s comeback continues as the automaker reported another strong sales month in January, continuing a string of consecutive sales increases that began last year.
According to a recent press release, VW’s January sales totaled 23,510 vehicles. The sales figure represents a 17.1 percent increase over January 2016.
Tiguan posted a sales increase of 39.1 percent over last year. Sales of the compact crossover totaled 3,516 vehicles.
Sales of the Golf SportWagen were up an astonishing 189.9 percent over last year. At that time, the Jetta SportWagen was being phased out and replaced by the Golf. Golf SportWagen sales for January 2016 were 706. Sales last month were 2,047. The Golf SportWagen family includes the all-new Alltrack.
Midsized Passat sales were up 64.2 percent, hitting 5,887 vehicles. In January 2016, Passat sales were 3,586 vehicles.
Interestingly, there was a counter-trend in January. Touareg sales, rather than mirroring other automakers where crossover sales continued their upward push, were off 30.2 percent. Other than the Touareg aberration, sales other sales trends were pretty much as expected. Car sales, which have been tailing away since the middle of last year, continued their downward motion. For example, Golf R sales were down 7.1 percent, while Jetta Sedan sales were down 16.3 percent.
