Find out your 3 completely different choices for cargo area with the 2020 4Runner. This should help you while researching your next purchase.
Some things are givens when looking at a Toyota 4Runner. It is certainly tough and durable. A 4Runner is also proven with a great reputation for lasting well over a decade and several hundreds of thousands of miles. This is what we call peace of mind.
You will also find you have a choice to make, when buying one, about how you would like your cargo area equipped. There are a few very different, quite distinct options.
Choices for 2020 4Runner cargo space
First off, you will be deciding between a sliding rear cargo deck, a 3rd row of seats and an empty cargo space with neither of the first two options. There are eight different trim levels for the 2020 Toyota 4Runner, each offering varying combinations of these features.
VIDEO REVIEW: See these 3 cargo area choices for yourself in my video review.
You can get a sliding rear cargo deck and an empty cargo area on all grades. Third row seats are not available for TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro and Venture Edition levels, but you can find them on SR5, SR5 Premium, Limited and Limited Nightshades.
Sliding cargo deck for 2020 4Runner
This sliding deck is a great idea by the 4Runner engineering team. It pulls out similar to a work bench or plywood on sawhorses. In my mind, I see this as ideal for working on projects, tailgating, sitting on it to watch your kid’s ball game or fireworks. This tabletop deck holds up to 440 pounds.
2020 4Runner 3rd row seats
Adding a 3rd row of seats would be perfect if you have a family size bigger than five, or if you plan on having your kids and their friends carpooling or traveling together for family road trips. The 4Runner has up to seven passenger capacity.
The drawback, as you would imagine, is the small amount of storage space behind this last row. Plan on 9.0 cubic feet for storage. This is a trade-off to mull over – people for space.
Empty cargo space in 2020 Toyota 4Runner
Some people have no need for either the sliding deck or the extra passenger seating, so it would be ideal to go with empty space. Doing so will save you $350 for the cost of the sliding rear cargo deck or $1,085 for the extra seating row.
2020 4Runner cargo capacity
As you may expect, the amount of cargo space available varies based on how you decide to equip your back storage area.
The highest 4Runner cargo capacity comes when you have an empty cargo space. Plan for 89.7 cubic feet behind the 1st row and 47.2 cubic feet behind the 2nd row.
With a sliding rear cargo deck you have created 88.8 cubic feet behind the 1st row and 46.3 cubic feet behind the 2nd row.
When you incorporate a 3rd row, look for 88.8 cubic feet behind 1st row, 46.3 cubic feet behind 2nd row and 9.0 cubic feet behind 3rd row.
2020 4Runner powertrain
A 2020 Toyota 4Runner utilizes the combination of a 4.0-liter V6 engine and a 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with sequential shift capabilities. This produces 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. torque.
Since this is a refresh year, your 2020 4Runner upgrades several features to improve safety, convenience and appearance. Toyota Safety Sense is the biggest addition. Also expect 8-inch multimedia touch screens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, 2 rear USB ports and re-designed color multi-information display. Some even have remote engine start.
Time for your thoughts on 2020 4Runner
I am curious to hear your opinions. What cargo space option is the best fit for you and your family? Have you purchased a new 4Runner lately and how is it so far? What do you like most about it? How many miles on your current 4Runner?
