Watch as 2022 Tundra and 2021 Tundra compete in a tug of war, along with 3 other competitions.
I have had the ability this past week to evaluate the new 2022 Toyota Tundra. Specifically, this one is a Tundra SR5 with a TRD Sport Package in Blueprint color.
One of the logical questions for truck fans to ask is whether the 2022 Tundra or 2021 Tundra is superior.
Clearly, this new generation Tundra comes in with increased horsepower and torque, along with an even more powerful hybrid option. Mix in all-new ride comfort, technology, styling, and safety. Pretty much everything to lay a blanket statement out there.
So, 2022 Tundra wins hands down, right? Not so fast, because there is more to the story.
Time to see if an old-fashioned one-on-one competition can solve things for us.
2022 Toyota Tundra vs 2021
Fred Anderson Toyota in Raleigh, NC made this competition possible. First, they bought this 2022 Toyota Tundra themselves to use for demonstrations, test drives, how-to videos, and more.
Plus, one of their employees offered up their 2021 Tundra TRD Pro in Lunar Rock.
In a video posted yesterday on their YouTube channel, both trucks compete in 4 contests – tug of war, horn test, exhaust test, and road speed test.
VIDEO: Tug of war between 2022 Tundra and 2021 Tundra
Let’s first set the stage.
A 2021 Toyota Tundra features a 5.7-liter V8 engine that produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. torque. This is matched with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
In comparison, the standard 2022 Tundra i-FORCE engine is a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. This delivers 389 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. torque, and it is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.
2022 Tundra vs 2021 Tundra Competition
Of course, pure power is not the only consideration here. Both trucks have different tires on them, are different trim levels, have different weights, and different gear ratios.
My hypothesis was that the 2021 Tundra would beat 2022 Toyota Tundra in the tug of war due, in part, to its upgraded tires. I felt they could offer more traction, and that would counter the big difference in power between generations.
Let me know who you think should win each of the four contests – the stronger pulling power, the better horn, the better exhaust sounds, and the better acceleration (both from stopped position and from a rolling drive).
Time for Your Toyota Tundra Comments
If you watched the video between Toyota Tundra 2022 versus 2021, were you surprised by anything from either contest?
Did your opinion change for either 2022 Toyota Tundra or 2021 Toyota Tundra?
If you had to choose, would you rather buy a 2021 or 2021 Tundra?
Thanks for watching everyone. See you next story when I show all I know about all-new 2022 Tundra Capstone trim level.

Wait a couple years and turbo
Wait a couple years and turbo's start to burn up and over stressed V6's fry. The V8's will still be going strong. Won't see 300,000 miles out of over worked 6. It is all about physics. This will be bad for Toyota. Sad to see.
Apples to pickles. Worst
Apples to pickles. Worst comparison ever. I am a little surprised the Trd pro got out pulled with it's setup. new truck does have a lower center of gravity. Might help.
Let's see a reliability test
Let's see a reliability test. The turbo will break and that will be a big buck expense. Plus an off road tug of war.
