Is it best to purchase the newest model year of a vehicle or go for the previous year? Here are tips to help you choose between a 2020 Toyota Tacoma SR5 and a 2019.
This is the time of year where automobile buyers have a difficult decision. As the year is beginning to wind down, often automakers release their new model years and these vehicles begin shipping to dealerships all over the country.
The exciting move is to buy the shiny new car, truck or SUV that may have new features and updates. However, there are plenty of (I hate to use this term) leftover choices from the previous model year.
A perfect example of this exact dilemma lies with the Toyota Tacoma. For the model year 2020, Tacoma has come out with several new updates to refresh this popular midsize truck. Let’s look at the 2020 Tacoma SR5 and compare it to the 2019 model year.
2020 Tacoma SR5 offers a host of new updates
For me one of the more important and also underrated improvements is the addition of a 10-way power driver’s seat. In fact, Toyota has upgraded this power seat on all 2020 Tacoma models that utilize the V6 engine and are SR5 grade level and above. This should help make road trips much more comfortable whether you are taller or shorter or any size.
Also, multimedia improvements will assist in solidifying Tacoma’s stranglehold on the midsize truck market. Tech fans have been calling out very loudly for Toyota to bring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to Tacoma. They are rewarded this year, as every 2020 Tacoma across the board is getting these popular applications as standard equipment.
Larger multimedia touch screens will assist you in seeing this information. The SR5 2020 Tacoma comes with an 8-inch touch screen, which is larger than the 2019 model’s 6.1-inch screen.
The wheels on a 2020 Tacoma SR5 are new
If you choose the 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR5 V6, you will drive around in with 16-inch bright metallic alloy wheels. The 2020 Tacoma has updated its wheel design to a dark gray color. Spoiler alert: they look sharp.
The front grille has changed between model years. Although similar in shape, the incoming 2020 Tacoma features solid horizontal slats that are bold and striking. A 2019 SR5 features openings within these slats. They both look appealing, but each person will see it differently as to their favorite design.
Interior seat fabric is different as well. Center seat inserts feature a new and upgraded pattern.
Pricing. This would be a great reason to both choose a 2020 Tacoma and to choose a 2019 model. MSRP factory price difference between last year’s model and this new model is only $200. This is going to be a tough decision.
Let’s take a Tacoma SR5, V6, 4x2 Tacoma as an example. Factory MSRP for a 2019 is $31,915, while the same truck for 2020 has increased to only $32,115. Statistically speaking, it’s nearly identical when you are talking about a truck priced around the $30,000 range.
However, this is the time of year when many manufacturers across all brands and their dealerships may offer specials and deals on their previous year vehicles. In short, they want to clear out their current inventory to make room for the new. This could potentially be a time when customers can get a nice price on a 2019 model.
