The new 2020 Toyota 4Runner models are finally here. Is it a better option to buy the new 2020 4Runner TRD Pro or should you go for a 2019 model? Here are tips to help you decide.

Refreshed 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro models can be seen on dealership lots starting this month. In fact, they are already at some retail destinations already. This leaves buyers with a tricky decision about what model year to purchase – the 2020 or the 2019.

I recently wrote a Torque News article comparing the 2020 4Runner Limited against the 2019 Limited, and now we can research the TRD Pro options further.

There are two schools of thought here. On one hand you have the shiny brand new 2020 4Runner with new updates, including modern interior styling, along with plenty of new safety and technology. On the other, though, you still have a shiny new 2019 4Runner, but one that comes with a lower price tag.

Pricing for both 2020 4Runner TRD Pro and 2019

Normally when comparing two vehicles, I find it best to discuss differences in their features first and then show pricing deltas next. However, it might be more logical with the 2020 4Runner versus the 2019 to show pricing first. Yes, we shall do that.

If you look at the window sticker for a 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro, you will see it has a factory MSRP of $46,815. Since we are in an apples-to-apples kind of world, we quickly look and see that the factory MSRP for the 2020 4Runner TRD Pro is $49,765. This is a price increase of $2,950.

Yes, I think we all realize by now that each year, just about every vehicle across all brands goes up in price, and pricing rarely decreases from year to year. However, now the question is to determine if the upgrades in the 2020 model year are worth it to you to pull the trigger, or if you should go with the 2019.

Tell me what is new with the 2020 4Runner TRD Pro

It might be best to start by telling what will be the same with the 2020 4Runner. Since this is not a full redesign year, the powertrain will carry over from last year’s model. Drivers will find a 4.0-liter V6 engine delivering 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. torque matched with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

Multimedia fans will be pleased with the additions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with Waze and Amazon Alexa compatibility, to every trim level of 2020 4Runner. Also, the interior cabin has been tremendously improved with a larger, fresher 8” multimedia touch screen with new buttons and controls. I feel this upgrade brings the interior look of the 4Runner into modern times, thankfully.

Rear seat passengers can charge easily and conveniently with standard across-the-board double USB ports.
Also, a big improvement is the addition of Smart Key push button start with auto unlock door handles to the 2020 4Runner TRD Pro. This applies to not only the driver’s side front door, but also the passenger side as well.

You will notice a new muscular sound when you start up your 2020 TRD Pro, as it now features a black-tipped cat-back exhaust. This gives your new 4Runner a tougher, throatier sound as you start up and accelerate.

Toyota Safety Sense arrives in 2020 Toyota 4Runner

Perhaps the most important addition to the 2020 4Runner is Toyota Safety Sense (TSS-P). This new set of active safety features will assist you in avoiding many front and side collisions, as well as assisting you driving at night with automatic high beams. Other features of TSS-P are pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with sway warning and dynamic radar cruise control.

You will find Toyota Safety Sense on every grade of the new 4Runner, including TRD Pro. This should provide drivers and their families with additional peace of mind while they road trip it along the highway or off-road it down their next remote trail.

Tell us the color choices for 2020 4Runner TRD Pro

There are three color options for buyers interested in a 2019 TRD Pro. Potential owners can pick from Super White, Midnight Black Metallic or Voodoo Blue.

If you are considering the 2020 4Runner, the TRD Pro is available in Magnetic Gray Metallic, Super White, Army Green and Midnight Black Metallic. This same 4-color selection can also be found when looking at 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro, 2020 Tundra TRD Pro and 2020 Sequoia TRD Pro.

Time for your thoughts on 2020 4Runner vs 2019

This is an exciting time to be a fan of Toyota cars, trucks and SUVs. This fall, and until the end of the year, you will see many of your favorite models being introduced with quite a few updates, upgrades and improvements.

I am especially looking forward to the many changes found in 2020 Tacoma. This should get very interesting for fans of the nation’s best-selling midsize truck. And, of course, when the all-new 2020 Highlander is released in December, it will certainly turn a lot of heads based on all the changes I have been hearing about.

What do you think of the 2020 4Runner upgrades? Are you more interested in a 2019 4Runner due to lower costs? Which 2020 Toyota model are you most looking forward to seeing?

Thanks for reading everyone. See you next story.
