Tesla, the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has reportedly produced 868,000 of its latest 4680 battery cells in the last 7 days. This is a major milestone for the company, as it is the first time that Tesla has produced such a large quantity of the new battery cells in such a short period of time. It's basically enough for roughly 1 out of every 3 cars produced at Giga Texas. Not bad.
The 4680 battery cells were unveiled by Tesla in September 2020 and are the company's most advanced battery technology to date. They offer several benefits over the previous 2170 battery cells, including higher energy density, improved range, faster charging times and a greater number of cycles before degradation. In October, Torque News reported that Tesla will triple the 4680 battery cell production soon. And thus, Tesla just announced a milestone in its 4680 battery production. The team achieved 868,000 cells built in just 7 days.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously commented on the potential of the 4680 cells, saying "they are the key to achieving a million miles of range for electric vehicles."
I suspect that Tesla has plans for a complete switch very early in the new year to a production 4680 model Y. This is part of the reason they are slowly lowering prices as these cars should be very cheap and thus profits will not fall as much as people think. One way or the other we will find out real soon.
In any case, I am so curious what their plan is right now. Probably stockpiling for Cybertruck? I guess they could use them for Model Y SR again, if they don’t think they can ramp up CT fast enough to use the 4680 supply
The 868,000 4680 battery cells produced in the last 7 days is an impressive feat for Tesla and a sign of the company's increasing production capacity.
It is clear that Tesla is continuing to push the boundaries of battery technology and production capabilities and the recent number of 868,000 4680 battery cells produced in the last 7 days is a testament to that. With Tesla's ambitious production goals, it is likely that the company will continue to make advancements in battery technology and production in the years to come.
