The fuel economy for the 2013 Ford Fusion was posted for a short time on the government’s website and even though those specifications were quickly taken down – they were live on the site long enough for those numbers to quickly spread around the internet.
The 2013 Ford Fusion sedan will come with four basic trimlines (all packing 4-cylinder engines) but the most efficient non-hybrid configuration is the 179 horsepower 1.6L EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and front wheel drive – offering 25 miles per gallon in the city and 37mpg on the open road. When that same turbocharged engine is mated to the optional 6-speed automatic transmission fuel economy drops just a bit to 23mpg in the city and 36 on the highway. These figures (25/37) make the Ford Fusion one of the most fuel efficient cars in the midsized sedan class, comfortably beating the Toyota Camry and the Chevrolet Malibu while offering similar highway mileage to the Honda Accord. Only the new Nissan Altima beats the Fusion in both city and highway fuel economy among non-hybrid models with 27 around town and 38 on the highway…along with also offering a slight advantage in horsepower (182).
Those who want better fuel mileage can opt for the 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid which offers an incredible 47 miles per gallon whether you are in the city or on the highway. That makes the Fusion Hybrid the second most fuel efficient hybrid on the American market (excluding electric vehicles like the Chevy Volt) with only the Toyota Prius offering better fuel economy (51 city, 48 highway). This incredible fuel economy by the Fusion Hybrid should really help Ford stay atop the hybrid sales leaders in the US and with the sharp styling of the 2013 Fusion – the new Hybrid model could attract some attention from prospective Prius buyers. This will also present more of an uphill battle for the Honda Civic Hybrid which offers less fuel economy than the Fusion along with being smaller and less upscale.
The entry level engine for the 2013 Ford Fusion is the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine which offers 170 horsepower and 22mpg in the city/34mpg on the highway. Realistically, this base model engine will likely have a low take rate but those who do opt for the base engine still get very impressive fuel economy figures. Those who love the look of the 2013 Ford Fusion and are more interested in power than class-leading fuel economy can opt for the 2.0L EcoBoost engine that packs 237 horsepower. This mill can be mated to either front wheel drive or all wheel drive with the FWD models offering 22mpg around town and 33 on the highway while the AWD models offer the same 22mpg in the city and 31 on the highway.
The 2013 Ford Fusion is way more than just another midsized sedan with strong fuel economy figures, as Ford totally revamped the image of the Fusion with this new model. Inside and out, the 2013 Fusion is far more upscale than the current models or any of the competition in the class. Add all of that to the great fuel economy and powerful EcoBoost engine options and the new Ford Fusion should be a real competitor for the bestselling car in the US.
