One of the few downsides to attending the Dearborn debut of the 2015 Ford Mustang GT was that it was held inside and that meant that those of us who were introduced to the new Mustang in the heart of the American auto industry did not have a chance to hear it run – until now.
After last week’s multinational debut, Ford Motor Company has made a few more stops with the 2015 Ford Mustang GT including a trip to a Cars and Coffee event in Irvine California where one onlooker was quick to whip out the video camera and catch moving pictures of the colorful new Mustang. Mind you, the cameraman (or woman) was the one moving while the 2015 Mustang was parked but we still get a great look at the newest pony car from a variety of angles and from every side. More importantly, this video has some great sound as the handler of the 2015 Mustang GT fired the car up for the crowd to hear it idle and towards the end of the video, there is a series of nice hard revs and – not surprisingly – the 5.0L V8 sounds absolutely incredible across the entire RPM range.
When you watch this video with the hopes of hearing the 2015 Ford Mustang GT’s Coyote V8 clearing its throat, keep in mind that there are a bunch of other Mustangs lined up around this new model as owners wait patiently for photo ops with the newest member of the Mustang family. About 17 seconds into the video, the cameraman is in front of the 2015 Mustang and it sounds like it has a very radical camshaft based on the lope of the exhaust note but as the camera moves towards the rear of the new Mustang, we can see a slightly older Shelby GT500 parked head to head with the new model and I believe that it is this GT500 that is the one packing the lumpy camshafts. The cammed engine could also be one of the other Mustangs lined up off camera but in any case, the first few seconds of the video with the new Mustang firing up and idling seems to make it pretty clear that the 2015 5.0L isn’t quite as “cammy” as some of the modified Mustangs also in the parking lot. About a minute and forty seconds in, we can also hear what seems to be the whine of a supercharger and before anyone goes running off to their friends to talk about how the 2015 Mustang GT sounds supercharged – I would point out that the sound in question also comes from another car in the area.
The most exciting portion of this first “action video” of the 2015 Ford Mustang GT comes around the 1:51 mark as the handler climbs in and gives the 5.0L V8 a couple good, hard revs. The 2015 Mustang GT sounds great – albeit a little overmuffled – but that is something that private owners will most certainly change once these cars start finding new homes across America. Even with the basic need to make the Mustang GT quiet enough for normal street use, the 2015 model sounds like it might be a touch throatier both at idle and through the mid-range revs. Hopefully Ford worked some magic so that the V6 and new 4-cylinder EcoBoost Mustangs will also sound great..but there is no way that either of them will sound as awesome as the mighty 5.0L V8.
In short, all of you import performance fans and diesel lovers who scoffed at my disapproval of an oil-burning 2015 Mustang – pay close attention to the video so that you can learn what a proper American muscle car sounds like.
Props to YouTube user SotA1080 for catching the 2015 Mustang GT with its engine running on video!
