The sales boom for the 2015 Ford Mustang continued in April 2015, posting the best sales figures in almost a decade while once again comfortably outselling both the Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger – and Mustang sales are likely to continue to improve as we get into the summer months.
All of the people who insisted that the new face of the 2015 Ford Mustang would prevent it from succeeding in the United States are clearly incorrect, as the Mustang posted incredible sales numbers in April 2015. The Chevrolet Camaro posted growth over the past two months and the Dodge Challenger posted record sales figures in April 2015, but the Mustang still beat the Camaro and the Challenger in April sales.
April 2015 Mustang Sales
With a stunning total of 13,144 units sold last month, Ford sold more Mustangs than I have ever seen in my 4 years of covering the segment sales race and this comes after the Mustang posted a similar record in March when “only” 12,663 units were sold. 13,144 Mustangs sold in April marks an increase of 82% over the same month last year, when only the 2014 Mustang was available – clearly showing the popularity of the next generation models.
Back to back monster sales months for the 2015 Ford Mustang have led to very strong sales numbers through the first third of the calendar year, with a whopping 42,955 units sold thus far. Through all of 2014, Ford sold 82,635 Mustang coupes and convertibles and while we are only 4 months into 2015, the Mustang has already sold 52% of the total from all of 2014.
At this rate, Ford is on pace to sale over 128,000 Mustangs in 2015, but I don’t think that the current average of 10,739 units per month will continue all year long. However, the Mustang has a very real chance of topping 100,000 units sold in 2015. To do so, Ford needs to average just 7,130 units per month from May through December and during the 2014 calendar year, Ford averaged 6,880 Mustangs sold per month with just the previous generation models available.
Camaro and Challenger Sales
The Chevrolet Camaro posted another lackluster month in April 2015, moving just 6,909 units, but that was enough for the Chevy muscle car to pull back into the second spot in segment sales after trailing the Mustang and the Challenger in March. Camaro sales are solid, but they are surely down a bit from where they would be if not for a new generation model on its way.
On the other hand, things are going great for the Dodge Challenger, as the Mopar muscle car continues to enjoy the sales boom of both an exterior refresh and the arrival of the Hellcat models with 707 horsepower. Dodge sold 6,771 Challengers last month, which is a new sales record for the modern era of the Challenger.
Mustang Versus the Competition
While some critics will insist that these strong sales are due to the new 2015 Mustang and that same boom is to be expected of any brand new sports car, so I dug up the sales figures from the Chevrolet Camaro in its first year of existence in modern form. For those unsure, the Camaro was introduced for the 2010 model year in the summer of 2009 after the Camaro had been out of production since 2003. GM fans were frothing at the bit to finally have their muscle car back and when the Camaro arrived, it instantly became the bestselling performance car in America.
However, during the first 12 months of sales for the 5th generation Camaro, the best month was June 2009, when 9,320 Chevy muscle cars were sold. At no point in the first year of sales did the Camaro top 10,000 units and in the past four years in which I’ve been covering the muscle car segment sales, Camaro has only topped 10,000 units once – the Mustang has topped 12,000 each of the last two months.
In other words, when you compare the early success of the 2015 Ford Mustang to the early success of the current Chevrolet Camaro, the Mustang has a huge sales advantage, but it is hard to compare two calendar years that far apart, as the economic climate also plays a big part in performance car sales.
The big test will come when the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro hits the market later this year. It will be interesting to see if the new Camaro can match the insane sales figures of the new Mustang.
I'm sure Chevy and Dodge will
I'm sure Chevy and Dodge will copy ford again and their sales will increase
Mustang has led the sales
Mustang has led the sales race in the majority of the years when both Camaro and Mustang have been offered, so the return of Mustang's historical domination of the pony car segment is hardly a surprise.
Besides, Mustang is a much better automobile than Camaro.
I love how all the little
I love how all the little pony car guys always love to comment on camaro news must be the fact that they all fear the new model just like they did back in 2010 and camaro out sold and out performed the little pony up until the new model i cant wait till the new camaro comes out and put the little pony in its place again
Too bad the 2016 Camaro is
Too bad the 2016 Camaro is just a small change from the 2015 and it will be a big disappointment. After having had both cars I can tell you the Mustang is a much better car then the Camaro was. The 2015 Mustang is a huge step up in quality doors are solid and the interior is amazing. Camaro doors sound like a tin can when you close them and the interior is garbage. Don't make a lane change in a Camaro because visibility is awful.
Too bad you don't really know
Too bad you don't really know what you are talking about. Since when does a complete overhaul, including a change in platform, constitute a small change? The 2016 Camaro hasn't even been unveiled yet, and somehow you already know the result eh? So much for credibility.
Too bad the car leaked. Too
Too bad the car leaked. Too bad it is a big disappointment. Too bad GM flat out said the change is evolutionary not revolutionary. Change in platform not new. The platform has been used on the CTS and ATS. Oh ya and that back end that tries so hard to be a 90's Honda. Do some research the details are out there.
Haha you are too much. The
Haha you are too much. The alpha platform on the ATS and CTS should make quick work of the competition in both the handling and weight departments. Yes, the styling of the Camaro is evolutionary, because the current model was so well liked. Under the surface there are significant changes happening, including all new powertrains, suspension components and materials. Your preemptive bashing of the new Camaro makes it pretty obvious you lack confidence in the Mustang.
I have had both the mustang
I have had both the mustang and camaro for the record. I agree underneath the camaro will be different. Alpha platform is lighter then zeta. It will basically be a ats. The 5th gen was nice in 2010 but it is time for a refresh. The s550 mustang looks totally different then the s197. Part of these cars is being seen in them if it looks like a fifth gen may as well keep my fifth gen. I have plenty of confidance in the mustang btw people are running 12.6 in the quarter mile off the 2.3 with just a tune. Camaro visibility is also awful. Can't say I miss that car one bit.
Yes, visibility is one area
Yes, visibility is one area that I certainly hope that the Camaro team has addressed, along with interior headroom. The big c-pillars are still in place from the looks of it, but at least there should be a camera to help remedy that concern. I fully expect the car to feel fairly similar to the ATS, but from what I've been hearing that should be nothing but a positive. With a wider track and a few other tweaks, this should be the best Camaro suspension wise that GM has put out.
I don't doubt that the 2.3 with a tune is running sub-13s, which is awesome to be sure. It should be a interesting match-up, now that the Mustang has given up the live rear axle, for road handling and track duties.
Will be interesting for sure.
Will be interesting for sure. Camaro needed to lose weight which they are doing with the 2016 and the Mustang needed to ditch the live rear axle which ford did with the 2015. Visibility was my biggest problem with my Camaro. Car is a good way to teach people how to properly use their mirrors for sure. Hard to believe they will fix that with the 2016 as you said. ATS platform should be a major improvement over the Zeta platform. Competition keeps making these cars better for sure.
Just shows that folks who've
Just shows that folks who've bought ford in the past will keep going back like beaten dogs...I've had 3 different generations of Mustangs, and just came off of driving a 2015 GT for a week. It's nice to see they haven't improved anything, and aren't likely to either...Ford is nothing if not consistently junk.
I guess someone hasn't done
I guess someone hasn't done their math correctly, as the combined sales figures for the Camaro and Challenger work out to 13,680. The 13,144 units of the Mustang does not represent "comfortably outselling" the competition combined.
The 2010-2012 models felt
The 2010-2012 models felt like a step back looks wise to the 2005-2009s. I feel the 2013-2014s they made just enough changes to make the car look like the best Mustang ever. Forget the 2015s, those are ugly! Go out and get a left over 2014 if you can.
Have to totally disagree with
Have to totally disagree with you. The 2015 is a major improvement in looks if you ask me. I like the more aggressive stance and it looks modern yet you can still tell it is a mustang. The IRS alone over the old live rear axel is worth getting the 2015 over the 2014. The interior is also a major upgrade. 2015 looks much better in person then in pictures btw.
Is Ford making the new
Is Ford making the new Mustangs out of aluminum pop cans like the 2015 Ford trucks to?
