General Motors announced yesterday afternoon that production of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is well underway and the first examples of the 6th gen muscle car will ship from the factory in Lansing, Michigan to dealerships around the country – meaning that those folks who put money down for a new model could be driving their new Camaro within the next couple of weeks.
The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is expected to introduce the muscle car world to the best entry from GM ever, with new engines, new transmissions, a smaller, lighter chassis, a more aerodynamic exterior and a more refined cockpit. All of those factors have prospective buyers waiting with cash in hand, and GM has understandably high expectations for the 2016 Camaro. With the Camaro having led the muscle car segment sales race and all sporty car sales in the US in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, the fact that the Ford Mustang has dominated the sales race in 2015 has become a stick in GM’s craw and the company is most certainly hoping that the 2016 Camaro will be popular enough to knock the Mustang down in 2016.
We are within a few weeks of finding out just how well the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro does in terms of retail sales and real world performance, as the first units will begin shipping later this week.
2016 Camaro Ready to Ship
It seems as though production of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro began without much notice from General Motors, but with the first units intended for retail rolling off of the assembly line in the Lansing Grand River plant yesterday this week – GM has announced that the delivery process is set to begin. The first units will ship out later this week and the company expects that buyers will be taking delivery of these first units within the next couple of weeks.
“It is an exciting day for everyone involved in bringing the new Camaro from a concept to the assembly line,” said Mike Trevorrow, Lansing regional plant manager. “As the transporters head out to dealerships across the country, the hard work and pride of everyone at Lansing Grand River Assembly goes with them.”
The first units shipping this week and over the next two months will be all 2016 Camaro coupes with either the 3.6L V6 or the 6.2L V8. The new turbocharged 4-cylinder won’t begin shipping to dealerships until early in 2016, nor will the convertibles. Exact timing hasn’t been announced, but I would expect to see the turbo-4 Camaro coupes arriving before the drop-top models since buyers all over the country can enjoy a powerful and efficient 4-cylinder engine in the middle of winter – while the convertible package won’t be as attractive to buyers in the northern states until spring.
In any case, dealerships around the country will begin receiving their 2016 Chevrolet Camaro coupes in the coming weeks and while many of the early arrivals will be spoken for in advance, it shouldn’t be long before your local Chevy dealership has a Camaro that you can walk in, test drive and buy.
The American muscle car war is about to begin its next chapter – and this book is getting very interesting.
