The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will make its grand debut this weekend at Detroit’s Belle Isle and according to a new report, the first examples of the next generation Camaro will reach dealerships around the US before the end of the 2015 calendar year.
The 2016 model year will introduce the next generation of the Chevrolet Camaro and this new “Camaro Six” will make its grand debut in less than 48 hours in Detroit. The 2016 Camaro will be built at General Motors’ Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant after having been built in Canada for the past two generations and while we don’t know when American production of the 2016 Camaro will begin – but we know now that General Motors plans to have the first units in dealerships before the end of 2015.
2016 Camaro Arrival
According to the Lansing State Journal, General Motors rep Erin Davis stated in an email that the company expects to have the 2016 Camaro in Chevrolet dealerships before the end of the year. This doesn’t come as a huge surprise, as launching a car a few months before the calendar year which corresponds with the model year has become a normal practice in today’s auto industry, but this is the first positive confirmation that the first 2016 Camaro buyers will have their cars in the late fall or early winter of 2015.
In other words, if you plan to spend the money to get a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro as soon as they reach dealerships, you could be five or so months away from having your new Chevy muscle car…even though you don’t know what the car looks like.
No Word on Production
While the company has made it clear that they plan to have the 2016 Camaro in the hands of owners during the 2015 calendar year, there has been no word on when production of the next generation muscle car will begin at the Lansing plant. Once Camaro Six production begins in Lansing, the Camaro will join the Ford Mustang as American muscle cars that are Made in the USA, with the Dodge Challenger continuing to be built in Canada.
First Units Demand High Prices
When the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro first reaches dealerships, we can expect that the very first units will go to those looking to spend a little extra money. I wouldn’t expect to see huge markups unless there is a very limited edition launch package, but if you want to be the first guy in town with a next gen Camaro, you had better buddy-up with your local Chevy dealership and make sure that they know that you have the cash in hand.
Of course, if I were a betting man, I would wager that we will see the very first 2016 Chevrolet Camaro sent to a high profile auction for charity. More likely than not, the first 2016 Camaro will be an SS and it will be auctioned off to someone like Rick Hendrick at a Barrett Jackson Auto Auction for a price that could top a million dollars.
