General Motors has finally rolled out a video showing the 2016 COPO Camaro making full passes down the quarter mile and this car is nothing short of awe-inspiring in every way – with a sound that is sure to put a smile on the face of anyone who loves American muscle cars and an 8-second quarter mile time.
The 2016 Chevrolet COPO Camaro drag racing package is offered with a variety of engines with the “quickest” being supercharged 350 cubic inch mill. General Motors hasn’t offered up any solid ET expectations, but they have said that the supercharged 350 will run in the 8s. Another engine option is the naturally aspirated 427 cubic inch LSX, which is what is under the hood of the COPO Camaro in action in this first official company video of the newest drag car on the track.
We have been talking about the 2016 COPO Camaro since even before the 6th generation Camaro was introduced, but today, we don’t have to dream about the new COPO car any longer. Today, we can all watch it rocket down the quarter mile in high resolution and with high quality sound…oh, that beautiful sound.
First 2016 COPO Camaro Track Footage
Before you watch the video of the 2016 COPO Camaro – if you haven’t already skipped down to watch it – you should know that we don’t get to actually see any track times. We never see the run completely from beginning to end and we never see any numbers on the big board. However, at the very end of the video, the two guys nearest the camera turn away from the camera and one says “8.99” and the other guy says (who has the time slip) adds “with a zero”. That is an 8.990 quarter mile with the factory-built 2016 COPO Camaro with the 427 LSX engine, a 3-speed automatic transmission and a solid rear axle.
If this is supposed to be the “slower” 6th gen COPO Camaro engine option, it will really be interesting to see what the supercharged models do when they start getting into the hands of owners around the country – and when more tracks around the country open for 2016.
The best part about this video is that there are cameras all over the track and the car, so we get to see the 2016 COPO Camaro track workout from every imaginable angle. There are even clips form under the car, showing the suspension work and the wheels lift, and one in the engine bay. We get to see launches, burnouts, and top end pulls from around the car and a few different track angles – really giving us every angle that we could want. Also, while some of the camera microphones get overworked by the wicked roar of the 427, this video really gives us all a rare chance to hear the COPO roar.
When that 2-step kicks in early in the video, you get a quick idea of how great this COPO Camaro is going to be from start to finish. Make sure that you have the speakers cranked up and enjoy!
