A few weeks back, we brought you a short video showing a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 on the dyno in stock form and today, we bring you a look at that same supercharged GM muscle car, which has received a few new components and a few hundred extra wheel horsepower.
Back in late November, we featured what was the first dyno run video I had seen with the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The LT4 V8 in the new monster Camaro is rated at 650 horsepower and 650lb-ft of torque at the transmission, and that video in late November proved that around 554 horsepower and 532lb-ft of torque makes it to the real wheels in a manual transmission car.
Those are impressive numbers, but the owner of this black 2017 Camaro ZL1 wasn’t happy with “only” 554 rear wheel horsepower, so he had the Houston House of Power add some new components which raised the output by a significant margin – and today we have a video of this built ZL1 stretch its legs on the dyno.
Tommy’s ZL1 on the Dyno Again
When we watched this 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 (which is owned by a guy whose YouTube account is named ZL1 Tommy – leading me to believe that the owner’s name is Tommy) back in November, it was 100% stock.
This time, Tommy has added new pulleys (for increased boost), headers with full exhaust, a new camshaft, a methanol injection system and a tune for E85 – all of which adds more than 200 horsepower at the rear wheels.
That’s right – the same 2017 Camaro ZL1 that laid down “only” 554rwhp in stock form jumped to 770rwhp with pulleys, full exhaust, a cam package and an E85 tune. This build also amounted to a major torque increase, climbing from 532lb-ft to a whopping 792lb-ft at the rear wheels, so that short mod list and a good tune added 216 horsepower and 260lb-ft of torque.
Unfortunately, Tommy doesn’t have any track videos, so we don’t know what kind of real world performance difference this extra power makes in the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, but we know that with 770 rear wheel horsepower – this Chevy muscle car should be able to battle almost anything that it comes up against on the street.
While the output of this 2017 Camaro ZL1 is impressive, the speed at which the owner has modified this muscle car leads me to believe that we are likely to see more videos and more power in the future – and I cannot wait to see what the Houston House of Power can do with the new supercharged Camaro. With the 1,000hp mark being the benchmark for “monster power” in the Hellcat community, we can expect that the GM camp will be shooting for four-figure horsepower numbers from their blown muscle car as well.
6 spd stick. Nobody dynos a 6
6 spd stick. Nobody dynos a 6 spd stick in 2nd gear or 3rd. It's 4 th that is correct. Any lower gear will always show higher power.
That's not a 2nd gear pull,
That's not a 2nd gear pull, Michael. First, second, step on clutch and go to 4th, and make the pull. No need to row through all the gears. Just need to get the wheels rolling with the lower gears.
