Yesterday we brought you the news that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro would be introduced at a special “public” event on Detroit’s Belle Isle and today, we bring you the unfortunate news that the event – while free – is officially sold out, and then some.
When General Motors announced late Sunday evening that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro would be introduced at a special event on May 16th in Detroit and that anyone who wanted to go could sign up to attend, the word spread like wildfire. In fact, by the time most sites (like this one) got the article up announcing the Camaro debut event, the automaker had already received as many registrations as they planned to accept and by the end of the day on Monday, GM had closed the registration process. This is good news for GM, as they have certainly gotten the kind of interest that they had hoped for, but it is bad news for those folks who wanted to go and who have not yet signed up.
Camaro Event Sells Out
When GM announced that the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro would finally be introduced on May 16th at Detroit’s Belle Isle, it was a big deal. It became an even bigger deal when GM announced that this 6th gen Camaro launch event would be open to the public and it might have become the GM enthusiast event of the decade when it became clear that the event was free to spectators. Not surprisingly, there was instantly a ton of attention from fans who wanted to be present for the debut of the 2016 Camaro, but the number and rate of registrations far exceeded GM’s expectations.
The company had initially planned to accept 1,000 registrations from prospective attendees for the Camaro Six debut in the Motor City, but when the sign up page went live at midnight Sunday night/Monday morning, Camaro fans were waiting by their computers to sign up. By 8:30am EST Monday morning, GM had already hit the 1,000 registration mark so in just eight and a half hours, all of spectator slots had been spoken for.
Even though GM had as many registrations as they had planned to accept by 8:30am, the company continued taking reservations through Monday evening, adding 800 more names to the list. These 800 people are on the waiting list, so if some of those folks in the top 1,000 should decide not to go, people in the second 800 will get their shot to attend the 2016 Camaro debut event.
How Will GM Fill the Event?
Now, we know that General Motors has seemingly accepted registrations from the first 1,000 people who signed up to attend the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro launch event and 800 people are on the waiting list, but it isn’t clear how GM will make sure that people are coming. The announcement that registration had closed came with the news that within those first 1,000 people, 40 of the 50 states are represented, so people will – in theory- be coming from all over the country to be there for the debut of the 6th gen Camaro.
However, in speaking with some folks who did register, there doesn’t seem to be a way for GM to make sure that those who are signed up actually show up. Should some of those folks who signed up right away change their minds and not notify GM, it will essentially keep people who would go from getting in, so hopefully the company has a plan in mind to make sure that people are definitely coming.
Regardless of how many people actually show up, the debut of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro should be a very exciting day for those Camaro fans present, as well as for the rest of us reading about the new 6th gen Camaro from around the world.
