The new Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R got its first Pirelli World Challenge GTS win this past weekend at the 11th event of the season, along with taking yet another 2nd place spot in the 2nd of the 2-race event at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course.
Lawson Aschenbach and his #10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R came into the 2-race Pirelli World Challenge event at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course in the top spot in the GTS class, but Aschenbach had not taken a win this season with the new Camaro GT4.R. That changed when the checkered flag fell in the first race last weekend in Ohio, with the new Camaro race program taking its 1st win in the GTS ranks of the Pirelli World Challenge.
Camaro GT4.R Gets GTS Win #1
The 2017 Pirelli World Challenge has gone pretty well for Lawson Aschenbach and his #10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4. Over the course of the first 10 races of the season, Aschenbach has driven the #10 Camaro GT4.R to a podium finish 9 times – including six 2nd place finishes and three 3rd place finishes. As a result, Aschenbach and the #10 Camaro came into the 11th and 12th races of the season at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course in the top spot for the GTS championship run.
For the 1st race of the Pirelli World Challenge at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course, Aschenbach and his Camaro started on the outside of the first row of the 17-car field. As the race started, Aschenbach took the lead and that was the last time that he had to pass someone. Ten laps into the race, a full course caution bunched the field up, but after a great restart, Aschenbach and his Camaro GT4.R cruised to victory while the rest of the field battled behind him.
The win in the 11th race of the 2017 Pirelli World Challenge was the first GTS class win for the new Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R while being the 15th GTS class win for Aschenbach, who now has the most wins in the history of the Pirelli World Challenge GTS class.
In the 12th race of the season, which was run at Mid Ohio on the day after the 11th race, Aschenbach and his #10 Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R started on the pole position, but when Ian James and his #50 Panoz Avezzano GT got around the Camaro in the middle of the race, Aschenbach was forced to settle for a hard-fought 2nd place finish. That is Aschenbach’s 7th time finishing 2nd this year and his 11th podium finish in 12 races – allowing him to extend his lead in the GTS class championship run.
