The first 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE intended for public purchase was auctioned off last weekend and as expect, NASCAR team owner and legendary car collector Rick Hendrick paid big money for the right to own this #1 – $250,000 to be exact – and it is all going to the United Way.
The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE will almost certainly prove itself to be the most capable Camaro ever when it comes to road course performance, likely beating every Chevrolet around a turn shy of the C7 Corvette Z06. The Camaro ZL1 is powered by a 650hp supercharged LT4 V8, making it the most powerful Camaro to date, while the 1LE kit – billed by Chevy as an “extreme track package” – makes it the most track capable Camaro to date.
As has become the popular trend over the past decade or so, General Motors sent the first production unit of the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE to an auction where it would be sold for charity. The first 5th generation Camaro, the first modern COPO Camaro, the first C7 Corvette Stingray and the first C7 Corvette Z06 were all auctioned off for charity and all of those cars were sold by a Barrett Jackson Auto Auction to NASCAR team owner and hardcore collector Rick Hendrick.
The first 2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE will eventually live with the rest of those production unit #1 Chevrolet performance vehicles, as Hendrick was the winning bidder of this #1 as well.
Hendrick Buys 2018 ZL1 1LE #1
As I expected when I did the piece announcing that the first 2018 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE was being auctioned off for charity, NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick was the winning bidder. I have not been able to find video of the bidding action leading up to the final gavel, but we know from the television broadcast that ZL1 1LE #1 sold to Rick Hendrick for $250,000.
The entirety of that quarter-million dollar payment will go to the United Way, so in addition to scoring himself yet another rare piece of Chevrolet high performance history, Rick Hendrick has made another massive contribution to a great cause.
It should be noted that the Camaro ZL1 1LE on the auction block isn’t actually Hendrick’s new ZL1 1LE. That was one of their show cars (also on display at the 2017 New York Auto Show), but when production of the 1LE begins later this year, Hendrick will get to pick his options and colors.
