General Motors has launched a website that is counting down to the official 50th birthday of the Chevrolet Camaro and based on the dates of the celebration – it looks like the Woodward Dream Cruise will almost certainly play host to the big event.
The Chevrolet Camaro was introduced for the 1967 model year so with the 2017 model year comes the 50th anniversary of the legendary GM muscle car (or pony car, if you prefer). It has been widely rumored that General Motors would host an event of some sort to celebrate the Camaro’s 50th birthday, but prior to the launch of this new website, it was unclear what GM would do and when.
Unfortunately, we still don’t know what General Motors has planned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Chevrolet Camaro, we know that the celebration itself will take place on the weekend of August 18th through the 20th in Detroit. The 2016 Woodward Dream Cruise will be held on August 20th in Metro Detroit, so it seems very likely that the company will throw a huge birthday party for their muscle car at the biggest celebration of motoring in the United States.
The Countdown Website
The new website teasing the 50th anniversary celebration for the Chevrolet Camaro has a timer at the top counting down to the weekend of August 18-20. As I write this piece, the clock on the website is 64 days, 19 hours and about 18 minutes from reaching the end of the countdown. The website has images of the Fifty Edition of the Camaro and a link to learn more about the anniversary package for the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro.
More importantly, the website invites us to “rally” and celebrate the Camaro 50th Anniversary from August 18-20 in Detroit, Michigan. That is the extent of the information on the website right now, but we are also instructed to stay tuned for more information on the schedule of events as well as a look at classic Camaro moments throughout the past six generations.
This website really doesn’t tell us much about what General Motors has planned for the Woodward Dream Cruise, but we can make a few guesses as to what the 50th anniversary celebration could include.
How Will GM Celebrate 50 Years of Camaro?
If I were a betting man – and I’m not – I would put good money on General Motors basing the majority of their Woodward Dream Cruise displays around the Chevrolet Camaro. While we can certainly expect to see some other models on display, including the Corvette, the Chevrolet trucks and maybe even some compacts, the Camaro will surely be the focus of the GM Woodward effort. We will likely see examples of every generation Camaro, including rare and special edition packages from the last half century – hopefully including some of the concept Camaros that led the way for production designs.
The Woodward Dream Cruise is a rolling car show, so it is almost a given that GM will show off every generation of the Camaro, but what else might GM do to highlight their favorite muscle car?
Well, based on rumors around the automotive water cooler, the Camaro’s 50th birthday party could also play host to the introduction of the highest performance Camaro of all time – the 6th gen Z/28. While there hasn’t been any official word from GM to suggest that the Z/28 will debut at the Dream Cruise, it is hard to question that fact that a new model debut would make the Chevrolet display a popular stop for the tens of thousands of show-goers wandering along Woodward Avenue on August 20th.
In any case, we can expect that the Chevrolet display at the Woodward Dream Cruise will have an impressive spread of Camaro models old and now, but over the next few weeks, we should get more information on how GM will celebrate the 50th birthday of the legendary Camaro.
