The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show brought us our first good look at the production version of the Ford Focus ST but this morning, the world was introduced to a new high performance compact as Ford rolled out the new Fiesta ST Concept.
The new Ford Fiesta ST Concept is powered by the 1.6L EcoBoost 4-cylinder, which uses turbocharging and direct injection to produce somewhere in the area of 180 horsepower. This power is sent to the front wheels of the Fiesta ST by means of a 6-speed manual transmission, which should allow the new hot hatch to rip from 0-60 in under 7 seconds – although we will have to wait for official power and performance numbers.
On the outside, the Ford Fiesta ST includes a handful of physical upgrades that give it more character while improving the aerodynamics and cooling. Like the concept Focus ST, the new Fiesta ST wears a bright orange paint scheme with a similar-yet-simpler wheel design tucked over high performance drilled rotors. Unfortunately, Ford exercised their use of the total window blackout so we cannot see what kind of changes will come to the interior but should the Fiesta ST get closer to seeing production, we can expect at least some interior upgrades to make it sportier than the other current Fiesta models.
While the sporty little Ford Fiesta ST is currently listed as a concept, company management states that production of this version is something that they are seriously considering – although they seem like sure on whether this newest hot hatch will make it to the American market. The key issue with the Fiesta ST coming to the American market is that this new sport model is based on the 3-door Fiesta, which isn’t available in the US. This leaves many wondering whether this fact will prevent Ford from offering it in the US and if it does come Stateside, will it still sit on the 3-door platform or will we get a hopped up version of the Fiesta 5-door currently available in America?
