The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall for 1,783 2011 Sante Fe SUVs for the same brake caliper problem that forced Kia to recall 7,700 Sorento’s last week.
The 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe and 2011 Kia Sorento share a great many of mechanical attributes as they were produced as part of a joint venture between the two Korean automakers. This is a benefit to the consumer as the producing sharing often allows for lower product costs and, through that, lower prices of those vehicles. The problem, as displayed here, is when one company has an issue (like the Sorento) the problem will generally impact the other company – in this case the 2011 Santa Fe.
This Hyundai recall is completely identical to last week’s Kia recall, with the brake calipers being incorrectly machined; potentially permitting the brake fluid to leak out. Over time, the lack of brake fluid can cause increased braking distances which can increase the chance of an accident. This Santa Fe recall affects models built between September 28th and November 25th 2010, with letters being sent to owners soon instructing them to return to their neighborhood Hyundai dealership.
The brake calipers will be inspected for any sign of leaks and any repairs will be made free of charge to the customer. Click here for a look at last week’s announcement of the related recall of the 2011 Kia Sorento.
