The Chrysler Group rolled out the very conceptual looking Jeep Wrangler Dragon Concept at the 2012 with design cues that seemed ideal for the Chinese market but word on the street is that the Dragon Package has been approved for production and is even reaching dealerships as you read this piece.
This interesting piece of news surrounding the Jeep Wrangler Dragon Package comes from the Mopar super geniuses at Allpar.com. According to Allpar, the Dragon Package entered production recently and shipments to dealerships around the country have already begun. This comes as a bit of a surprise considering that there hasn’t been any announcement made by the Chrysler Group or the Jeep brand but after thinking that the Dragon Concept would be a China-only affair – it made an appearance earlier this year at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show and got me wondering if it might be more than just a Dragon-themed concept vehicle. After all, it is really just a run of the mill Wrangler Unlimited in black with a bunch of dress-up goodies inside and out so it isn’t a package that requires much effort from the company to put it into production. Also, with a price of $4,500 – this is an expensive appearance package that should really help pad the bottom line on those vehicles equipped with the black and gold look.
The Jeep Wrangler Dragon Package is coded as 24D by the company and it appears to only be available on black Unlimited models. On the outside, the Dragon Package adds a unique grille design in black and gold, dragon decals on the hood and sides of the vehicle, 18x7.5” black and gold painted wheels, black bumpers, a black Mopar fuel door and headlights with gold bezels – although these probably don’t include the high tech dual projection setup from the concept vehicle. On the inside, the 24D Dragon Package is said to offer a blacked out look with more dragon theme along with a serial number plaque on the console.
The details on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Dragon Package don’t go much further than that but based on the list of features like individual tire pressure monitors, it sounds as though it is built around the Sahara or Rubicon package so it is towards the top end of the trimline spectrum for the tried and true Wrangler. Jeep hasn’t sold a ton of these appearance packages but that doesn’t prevent them from offering them up with offerings like the Islander package or those packages based on the Call of Duty gaming series. Ive not seen a great many of either of those two packages on the road but I have some seen which means there are people willing to tack a few grand onto the final price of their new Wrangler to have a vehicle that stands out from the rest of those models.
Like the rest of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited lineup, those vehicles fitted with the Dragon Package are powered by the 3.6L Pentastar V6 285 horsepower and 260lb-ft of torque. That power is sent to all four wheels via an advanced all wheel drive system and the buyer’s choice of either a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic transmission.
