The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of various 2010 and 2011 Porsche 911 models equipped with the race style center locking hub assembly due to early wear possibly causing the lugnut to work loose and release the wheel.
This rare Porsche recall affects 1,702 units from the 2010 and 2011 model year built between May 18, 2009 through September 17, 2010 - affecting the 911 Turbo, 911 Turbo S, 911 GT2 RS, 911 GT3, and 911 GT3 RS. The models being recalled are equipped with a locking hub assembly with one large, central lugnut holding the wheel onto the vehicle, similar to the style used on many modern racing setups (shown above).
Unfortunately, it seems that the hub assemblies on these recalled 2010-2011 Porsche models may exhibit excessive wear and as the locking hub section wears, the lugnut may become loose during normal driving conditions. Should the lugnut be left to continue to loosen it will eventually fall off and then the wheel can come free from the vehicle…very obviously increasing the risk of an accident. Since no one wants their wheels falling off – especially in a high performance supercar – Porsche is bringing back the 1,702 cars fitted with the super cool central locking hubs.
Porsche has not yet announced a time table for the beginning of the recall but when they do contact owners and ask them to return to the dealership, where a Porsche technician will replace the hub assembly AND the wheels with a new design that isn’t prone to working loose. This work will be performed free of charge and in the end, the owners of these high end Porsche models will end up with a new set of wheels. Winning!
