Volkswagen diesels facing fuel pump recall

Volkswagen Auto Group is currently under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for a possible problem relating to their fuel pump and should the government agency find it to be faulty, the German automaker could be variety of popular vehicles.

This investigation is based around 2009 and 2010 Volkswagen Jetta, Golf and Audi A3 models equipped with the 2.0L TDI diesel engines. The NHTSA has received around 160 complaints of power loss and stalling problems – one of which has resulted in an accident. The biggest problem is that about half of the complaints were based on issues that occurred while traveling at highway speed when the vehicle had a sudden, substantial loss in power or in the worst cases the vehicle would stall and not start back up.

According to the investigation report, the complaints state that the high pressure fuel pump used by the 2.0L TDI failed, causing a loss of fuel and contamination of the fuel system. After receiving 5 complaints directly (and another 100+ from Volkswagen), the NHTSA upgraded their investigation to “an engineering analysis” – which can often lead to a recall of the vehicles under investigation.

This investigation applies to 97,272 diesel powered Jettas, Golfs and A3s and Volkswagen is wisely working with the NHTSA to help come to a conclusion in this case. This problem comes on the heels of another investigation of the Volkswagen Passat for engine bay fire concerns stemming from an ignition coil failure along with a recall late in 2010 for VW Beetles, Jettas, Rabbits and Golfs for a fuel leak issue that can also result in an engine bay fire.

TorqueNews.com will continue following this story and should more information become available, including a recall of the vehicles in question, we will bring you all of the breaking details!

My 09 Jetta 89k miles HPFP exploded on the fourth of July, only humor I can find, am really bummed out, I really love this car. Don't know the true damage as I just found out today, but the dealer is working with VW, I hope they can find it in their hearts to get me back behind that wheel without too much pain. Wish me luck !!

My son's 09 Jetta TDI also blew a HPFP and I assure you it was NOT because he "misfueled" with gasoline. He has worked for me for many years driving a Cat 5 Diesel truck and he knows how to fuel it and his VW. I'm unclear as to what evidence the NHTSA used to buy into VW's lame claim that failure is due to Misfueling. After much discussion with the dealership they went to bat for him with VW and eventually VW covered the majority of the costs for replacement and repair of his fuel system. I believe the reason was that only that VW dealership had performed all services on the vehicle and he was a loyal service customer. I'm now looking at purchasing a new VW TDI as my 2006 has 200k plus miles on it and we would like a new/used sportwagen now. I'm looking at a 2009 with under 40k on it but I have not gotten a copy of VW service history yet.
Anyway, good luck to all TDI owners and I hope our story helps you in getting VW to stand behind your service needs.

purchased a 2012 Jetta in August of last year and now the high pressure fuel pump went out costing 7,000 to fix it, contacted VW they will not replace because the vehicle is over 15,000 miles their limit to repair, we are now out of a car, in which VW new about the affected part and not wanting to replace, and this did not happen from putting in wrong fuel. trying to find a lawyer.

my 2010 Jetta 2.0 TDI HPFP fragmented and lauched metal fragments through the fuel system, my has been serviced at dealerships. VW has refused to pay for repaires, the had a extended warranty for 120k mile, my car has 133.400. they said that i was sent a letter about the 120k warranty, I never saw that letter.
another dirty deal, how can we get reinbursed?
