One of the persistent questions asked at the launch of the 2012 Hyundai Veloster was, "When is it going to get a turbo?" The answer is: SEMA Show 2011 thanks to the efforts of ARK Performance, which is installing a twin-scroll turbocharger (and a whole lot more) in the three-door coupe.
The Veloster is powered by a new 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine mated to Hyundai’s first EcoShift dual-clutch transmission. It produces a right-sized amount of zip at 138 horsepower for its size, but sometimes you want a little more, like say 210 horsepower.
That additional 72 horsepower, a boost of more than 50 percent from the stock model, would put the 2012 Hyundai Veloster in sports car territory with 131 horsepower per liter. Heck, that's almost equal to what the entire 1.6-liter stock engine gets.
But it's not all about oomph when it comes to ARK's upgrades. ARK will provide the Veloster with ARK parts including an intercooler piping system, custom oil cooler, turbo manifold, lightweight pulley system, six-pot big brake kit, eight-point chromoly rally style roll cage, DTP track coilover system, upper strut and front and rear sway bar, camber and control arms, GRIP dual exhaust and RSEPC Downpipes and test pipes.
The ARK Performance Hyundai Veloster will showcase mechanical, interior and exterior modifications including an open wheel concept with aggressive fenders and Nitto tires. ARK will also develop Veloster specific parts to showcase the tunability of the engine and vehicle exterior.
“The Hyundai Veloster is an ideal car for enthusiasts with its distinctive design and dynamic architecture,” said Ted Lee, owner, ARK Performance Inc. “At SEMA, our ARK Performance Veloster will bridge the realm between an affordable sports car and an extreme motor sports vehicle. From the first Tiburon, to the Genesis Coupe, and now with the Veloster, ARK Performance continues to uphold the torch as the pioneer of aftermarket performance manufacturing for Hyundai.”
The 2012 Veloster interior is also going to see things get kicked way up. Improvements include JPM Coachworks Custom: OEM seats with alcantara interior, alcantara shift boot, alcantara dashboard, alcantara headliner, alcantara doors and visors, floor mats, and alcantara audio finish. Also included are Image Dynamics: Q450.4 Amplifiers, Q600.1 Amplifiers, XS65 Component Speakers and ID10D4 Subwoofers. From DSG Performance comes: Password JDM Shift Knob, SUN Automotive Eco, SUN Hyper Voltage System GT, SUN Automotive Gauss System, SUN Automotive Hot Inazma Pocket and SUN Automotive Hyper Ground System.
ARK Performance will also make moderate exterior modifications to the Veloster, including: ARK CFX Designs front lip, side skirt, rear bumper and grille; ARK SFX Designs wide front and rear fenders and rear wing mount; OneEighty custom headlights, taillights and fog lamps; Rally Armor custom veloster mud flaps and mounts; DSG Performance / Password JDM chromoly lug nuts; Yokohama Advan RZ Gunmetal x5; Nitto NT05 x5; and Beyond Autobody custom paint and finish

By the way, check out the ARK Performance website. On its front page is an ad for a 10-ON HY. Genesis ARK SFX Carbon Fiber Hood V-Vented for $959. I don't even own a Genesis and now I want to just to install the hood. Shows you how sick the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is probably going to be when its shows up at SEMA 2011.
