Just one day after Toyota announced at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show that it is bringing out a hatchback version of the Toyota Prius, GM CEO Dan Akerson said today that the Chevrolet Volt will come out in hatchback form, too, as well as a minivan.
Akerson made his comments at the 2011 Automotive News World Congress that is held concurrently with the media days of the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. His remarks were reported online by Automotive News reporters Mike Colias and James B. Treece.
According to their report (subscription required) Akerson is already in a mindset to start reducing the price of the Chevrolet Volt. The second generation of the Volt, which should be in four to five years time based on industry norms, will focus on lowering the pricetag of Volt’s technology.
GM has put an MSRP of $41,000 on the Volt with a federal income tax credit potentially lowering that price by $7500 down to $33,500. GM is also offering lease payments on a 36-month lease as low as $350 per month with $2500 due at lease signing including security deposit. The Volt currently is only on sale in to customers in California, New York, Michigan, Connecticut, Texas, New Jersey and the Washington D.C. area.
