Honda is running a 2 minute ad during game day featuring Matthew Broderick reprising his role as Ferris Bueller in the classic 80s film, this time featuring a CR-V.
If you're a child of the 80s like most of Generation X, then you are likely quite fond of the movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which was the movie that made Matthew Broderick a star. That classic is receiving homage in a new Honda commercial for the 2012 Honda CR-V. Broderick returns to his role as Ferris with over two dozen references to the original movie in this two minute Honda ad for the Super Bowl this weekend.
Big changes came to the crossover CR-V this year and Honda hopes to capitalize on those with this game day commercial. So in between watching the New York Giants and the New England Patriots, viewers can take a run down memory lane with Honda.
Not everything in the new ad is from Bueller's, however. The commercial is updated to reflect Broderick's life today. Gone is the truant officer from the school, replaced by an actor's agent keeping track of his "diva" who's supposed to be shooting a movie. Instead of singing on a parade float to a (likely still-copyrighted song), Broderick instead sings on a parade float in Chinatown in Mandarin.
The new twists and old references make for great whimsey, but is it enough to win over Super Bowl watchers who'll be treated to some of the most intense and innovative commercials of the year? I guess we'll find out on Sunday.
In the mean time, here's the commercial for your preview pleasure. Try to act surprised when you see it again with your friends during the big game. OK?
