The fifteenth win by the Mazda Miata comes with a compliment by Car and Driver.
This year the Mazda Miata again won a spot on the Car and Driver 10Best cars list. This is a back-to-back win for the Miata, but this year, Car and Driver (CD) coupled the Miata’s win by pairing the twice as expensive Porsche 718 Boxster/Cayman with the Miata Convertible and Roadster RF hardtop.
The Miata is no stranger to this list, having earned a spot 15 times over the years. CD says in its summary of the win that the Miata has come to define the word “Roadster,” which is exactly what it is called in some markets outside the U.S. CD said “It exemplifies the roadster ideal so perfectly and singularly that it’s easy to imagine the word “Miata” becoming Xerox for roadsters or fun. “
The Miata is now a family of cars since the introduction of the MX-5 Miata RF retractable fastback. CD could not help but notice that the Miata and the Cayman fulfill the same objective. The Porsche just happens to cost twice as much.

The Miata has come a long way since 1990, however, as CD points out, the current car weighs just 100 pound more, while delivering dramatically better performance, and including modern safety and infotainment.
