Toyota is expanding its off-road model line again to include more 4 Runners that can make their roofs muddy.

Toyota announced this week that it will add the two TRD Off Road trims to the 4Runner for 2017. Both the TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium will get more ground clearance, unique wheels, interior trim, and badging. Each also gets increased front and rear end body clearance for approaching and departing steep grades (compared to the base 4Runner).

Off-road enthusiasts will not be impressed by those features. What will blow their skirt up is the running gear. The TRD Off Road trims get the Multi-Terrain Select system which enables the driver to select from a variety of drivetrain tuning choices. Optional will be Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) facilitates extended wheel travel at slow speeds for greater off-road capability and stability. This system has a Mogul setting for uneven terrain. You know you want it.

Toyota is also including the electronic-locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) feature. We highlighted this technology in a past story after testing it ourselves, and it works as advertised.
