Mazda looks like it is creating the perfect two-row crossover with its 2019 CX-5 Signature.
When Mazda created the new 2018 CX-5 with its new looks and new features, we found the model close to perfect, So close, that one of the Torque News extended family bought one, trading in a BMW X3. Her assessment is that the CX-5 is better in almost every way. However, we do think that the CX-5 could benefit from a bit more low-RPM torque and a bit more high RPM power. Mazda must agree, because for 2019 that will now be an option.
Mazda's 2019 CX-5 Signature will get the same fantabulous 2.5-liter turbocharged engine option that the CX-9 first got, and is presently also offered in the Mazda6 sedan. We have driven this engine now in the Mazda portfolio for a total of about 4 weeks and have come to LOVE it. It isn't a light-switch type of turbo with power that comes on suddenly. Rather, it offers addictive low-end pull and all the power you need in any situation for passing and on-ramps. It seemed so ideally suited to the CX-5 we penned a story titled, "Mazda Is One Step Away From Perfecting The CX-5 Crossover." Mazda just took that step.
The new engine develops 310 lb-ft of torque just off idle. This means that the pull sensation from a stop is very satisfying. The engine also develops 227 hp in its peak RPM ranges, which means speed is there if you want it. Fuel economy is still good, and the turbocharged Mazda 6 has a less than 10% fuel economy penalty when the turbocharged engine is compared to the base engine. Since Mazda uses a geared transmission, there is no CVT drone and no odd sensations. The 6-speed automatic is a perfect partner to the 2.5 turbo.
In addition to the new better engine, Mazda is also adding some important features. First, is Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This technology was promised to 2018 model year CX-5 buyers as an update. Mazda has not fulfilled that promise yet, but we still hold out hope. Next, ventilated seats upgraded form the perforated seats now in the Grand Touring trim. Mazda also promises some special leather, but the leather in the top trims is already fantastic. A heated steering wheel and head-up display is already also part of the top-trim CX-5.
Watch for the new Mazda CX-5 Signature in early 2019. We look forward to testing it and possibly adding another CX-5 to our Torque News fleet of personal vehicles.
