Mazda is replacing its CX-9 with an all-new 2024 CX-90 model. Here are some of the features that will place it in the premium segment.
Mazda’s all-new 2024 CX-90 debuted today. The three-row CX-90 will replace the outgoing CX-9, an SUV that was loved by some, but considered flawed by many. While the CX-90 is certainly a big deal for Mazda, it is even more of a game-changer for the premium segment, now dominated by the Lexus RX and Acura MDX.
"At Mazda, our focus is to deliver an ownership experience that enriches the lives of our customers. With each new vehicle launch, we challenge ourselves to progress through our human-centric approach of design and engineering," said Jeff Guyton, President and CEO of Mazda North American Operations. "CX-90 offers powerful and responsive performance, alluring design, and intuitive technology. We're very proud of our team's work on CX-90, which we know is a breakthrough vehicle in its segment."
There is no base engine in the new 2024 CX-90. Rather, Mazda is dropping two up-powered engines into its new SUV, and both seem - on paper - to improve on what Lexus and Acura now offer. The first is an inline 6-cylinder turbocharged mild-hybrid engine. The second is a plug-in hybrid-electric powertrain. Both have a whopping 369 lb-ft of torque. With a 17.8 kWh battery, the new CX-90 PHEV should have an all-EV range of around 30 miles and aa fuel efficiency rating of about 70 MPGe. Both powertrains used a geared transmission. No CVTs.
The new third row in the CX-90 seems larger. Amenities include dedicated vents for each passenger, cupholders, and USB ports. The seats appear large enough for daily use by children, which are who third-row seats are intended to be used by.
Mazda has continued its drive towards the premium segment with a new interior for the CX-90. Cloth on the dash appears to be a nice touch that signals luxury and quality. The infotainment screen is now larger. Also, the HVAC system has physical buttons. If we had to compare the new CX-90's interior to another brand's, we would pick Volvo.
Mazda has not yet revealed prices or exact delivery date. We suspect the new CX-90 will have a price ranging from around $43,000 to around $55,000. Deliveries in the spring are a fair guess. Watch Torque News for a review of the CX-90 in the coming months.
