Amazon can now deliver packages directly to vehicles. Is your car compatible with Amazon's system?
Amazon now has a new service that allows you to have your packages delivered directly to the cargo area of your locked vehicle. Called Amazon Key, the system works very simply. You download an app and Amazon will use the telematics system in your vehicle to locate and unlock the cargo area for the delivery person. The package is placed inside your vehicle, and it is then locked. Like with all package deliveries these days, you can watch the delivery as it progresses and get confirmation when it is finished up.
Not all vehicles presently qualify. Volvos do. All you need is a model year 2015 or newer Volvo with an active Volvo On Call subscription. GM vehicles do as well. Any GM vehicle model year 2015 and newer with an active OnStar subscription will work.
Amazon isn't providing the service everywhere yet. It has already rolled out to 37 cities and is rapidly expanding. To see if your vehicle qualifies and if your area does, check out Amazon's page for more facts.
“The in-car delivery option is another way Amazon helps ensure that my order is delivered safely and conveniently. Setup was super easy for my OnStar-equipped car—I granted Amazon Key permission to open my car’s trunk and the ability to relock my car when done, and that was it,” said Scott L. from Miami, one of the Amazon Prime members who received early access to the service. “I can’t wait to check my car’s trunk to see what’s delivered next!”
Expect more automakers to add the service soon. Every modern automobile brand now has a telematics system and none will want to be left out of this new service opportunity.
Freak out in advance over privacy issues, safety issues, and all that jazz, but a peek at how Amazon executes the delivery and how long they have your vehicle location data and locking permission answers most of the obvious questions. Which leaves just one; "Is it free?" Of course, there is no added charge as long as you are an Amazon Prime Member. And who isn't?
One last thought; Amazon is now the only company in the world that can deliver replacement car parts to your car.
