A dealer-add-on has now caused all of Toyota’s popular models, like Camry, Prius, Tacoma, Corolla, Rav4 to be recalled.
Toyota’s Southeast Dealers have added seat heaters that can break when sat upon and short circuit, according to NHTSA. In its most recall campaign number 16V396000, NHTSA says that the optional dealer-added seat heaters can cause a fire.
The recall years of the above vehicles span from 2005 through 2011. About 8,000 total vehicles are affected. The Tundra, Venza, FJ Cruiser, Solara, Avalon, and Sienna are also included. Basically, the entire Toyota line of vehicles.
This recall begs the question, “Why are dealers in the southeastern U.S. adding seat heaters in the first place?” Why do residents in Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas want hotter seats? And if they do want heated seats, why doesn’t Toyota ship vehicles there with them?
The NHTSA recall information states “…vehicles equipped with aftermarket accessory seat heaters with a copper strand heating element. The electrical wiring in the seat heaters may be damaged when the seat cushion is compressed.” The fix may not make customers very happy. The dangerous dealer add-ons will simply be disconnected, and the value refunded. In other words, no more toasty buns for these vehicle owners.
