Review Part 2 - Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 - Sure-footed and Quiet

We updated our long-term test of the new Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 tire. At this stage, we’ve learned three things.

It has been about 1,200 miles and six weeks since we mounted the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 tires to our test vehicle, the 2024 Toyota Venza Hybrid. In that time, we’ve learned three things about this tire that shoppers will want to know. Let’s dive right in. For those who have not seen our introductory story, here is a link to the first one:

Review: Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 All-Weather Tires - A New Segment Benchmark?

Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 - Quieter Than Expected
The WeatherReady2 has an unusual V-pattern trim with deep tread grooves. One concern many shoppers may have is noise. We are happy to report that the tires are extremely quiet. We can detect zero added noise from these tires. Whether on the highway or back roads, the tires are as silent as any we have tested. There is no detectable difference between the test tires and the conventional all-season tires the vehicle came with. Being a hybrid, there are many times during driving that the engine is not running, so tire noise is easy to hear. Not with these tires. They are very quiet.

We’ve experienced temps in the single digits (F) and a lot of rain since we mounted the tires. They are outstanding in rain of any type and hydroplaning has not been an issue. Grip in cold rain is very good.

We’ve also driven over snow-covered surfaces and compacted ice/snow mixtures. On these surfaces, the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 have proven to be very sure-footed. Traction in wintery mix and light snow has proven to be very good. We’d rate these a 10 out of 10 in such conditions. We have not had deep snow yet, and will report on their performance as soon as it happens.

Our 2024 Toyota Venza Limited Hybrid is among the most efficient electrified vehicles in its class. It is optimized for fuel economy in every conceivable way, including its OEM tires. The original-equipment tires were “standard load” and the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 are Extra Load (XL) rated. The Goodyear’s are much more substantial and they weigh more. Roughly five pounds more. We predicted that this difference in design would result in a noticeable change to our fuel economy, and it has.

Prior to mounting, we recorded around 40 MPG over many miles. Post-mounting, the new tires have had an impact on fuel economy of around 5 MPG. The new MPG has been around 35 MPG since we mounted the tires. This is not unexpected. There are five reasons why new tires result in lower fuel economy, and we suspect that all five apply in this scenario.

Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 - Update Summary
Our summary of the test so far is that the Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady2 tire lives up to its billing as a premium all-weather tire with outstanding wet and winter performance. As a bonus, it has thus far proven to be extremely comfortable and quiet on our Venza. The fuel economy dip was not unexpected and, from our point of view, a fair trade for the security of the wet weather and winter weather conditions performance and safety this tire is providing to us on our daily 60-mile commutes. Check back in for a deep snow report as soon as Mother Nature provides us with an opportunity for testing.
