Although it is now expected, Toyota has the most vehicles with the industry’s highest safety rating.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety had a busy fall. The group, which performs the U.S. auto industry’s most comprehensive safety testing and evaluation has recently released the results of scores of cars’ safety scores. Each manufacturer has something to be proud of. However, when it comes to which automaker has the most IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) rated cars, it is again Toyota for the second consecutive year.
IIHS testing found that 50 models in the entire industry earn the TSP+ rating. Nine of those fifty are made by Toyota/Lexus/Scion. Scion has the distinction of being the only automaker in the country offering a TSP+ rated vehicle in the “Low cost” category. Not only does the Scion iA make the grade, the auto-braking forward collision prevention (FCP) system is standard (not optional). As IIHS put it “Besides the iA, autobrake is standard on just a few luxury vehicles. These include all Volvo models, some Mercedes-Benz models and the Acura RLX.”
The IIHS continues to change the rules of the TSP+ rating system. Now, a vehicle must earn good ratings s on all five crash tests and also have advanced or superior rated FCP. Toyota shook up the industry last year when it announced it would be adding FCP to most of its models for between $300 and $500. Most automakers, like Subaru for example, charge triple that amount. However, Toyota has yet to make that pledge a reality on important models like the RAV4 crossover.
The models from Toyota Lexus Scion that IIHS recognized as being TSP+ rated for 2016 are:
Scion iA
Lexus CT 200h, ES, RC, NX
Toyota Camry, Prius V, Avalon, RAV 4
