Generac is entering the home Level 2 charging business with a new charger. Here are the details.
Have you ever noticed that most of the electric vehicle charging companies have names you have never heard of before they entered the charging business? Well, a new charger about to hit the market comes from a brand you may know if you own a home generator. Generac is entering the electric vehicle charging space.
“We’ve seen an unprecedented rise in demand for electric vehicles in the United States,” said Joshua
Brister, director of product management at Generac. “We’re excited to help satisfy this high demand by
adding the Generac EV charger to our network of energy technology products.”
Generic says that its new EV charger will be reliable and easy to install. The company’s new Level 2 home charger is rated at 48A / 11.5kW. Depending upon how fast your EV can accept a charge and how large its battery is, the new Generac unit will be capable of charging a car battery in as little as four to six hours.
Like every home charger, the Generac unit’s J1772 “J-plug” connector is compatible with nearly all EVs on the market today, except one you may have heard of - Tesla. Of course, if you own a Tesla, you certainly have a J-plug adapter.
The new unit from Generac has a NEMA-4 enclosure which makes the unit rated for both indoor and outdoor residential installation. The Generac EV charger will be sold through Generac’s many sales outlets, including leading home improvement retailers, wholesalers, and hardware stores. Customers will also have the ability to have an in-home consultation with a turnkey installation through one of Generac’s local dealers.
“Electric vehicle owners need confidence that they can quickly charge to get where they need to go,” said Nick Schmidling, senior product manager at Generac. “As a leader in home energy technology, we’re introducing a product that homeowners can rely on, with a name brand they have come to trust for nearly 65 years.”
Generac plans to have the new EV charger ready for sale by the middle of 2023. Watch Torque News for more updates, including pricing, UL listing status, and possibly a test and review.
