What is the best SUV for camping? Check out eleven accessories for your Subaru Forester, Crosstrek, or Outback that turn it into a mobile campsite.
According to a recent report from Kampgrounds of America (KOA), camping has exploded in popularity in the last six years. An estimated 7 million people have started camping since 2014, with around a million new households purchased a tent in 2018. And outdoor adventure, from biking to hiking to kayaking is also on the rise.
The report also says campers are moving away from using a tent and picking less traditional options like sleeping in their vehicles and rooftop camping. That’s why owning a Subaru is so popular with a younger generation with active lifestyles who are flocking to the 2020 Subaru Forester, Crosstrek, and Outback all-wheel-drive models.
You don’t need to pull a camper, or even buy a tent to enjoy getting away from the city and getting further away from civilization. You will want a few accessories to make your camping trip enjoyable and keep your vehicle clean. The next six accessories are available from Subaru.
To keep your vehicle clean after being in the wilderness, Subaru’s All-Weather Floor Mats are a perfect solution ($69.95). Many owners take their furry friends along and a Compartment Separator/Dog Guard works great to keep animals safely behind the second seat. ($299.95).
When you lower your second-row seats, the cloth seatbacks are exposed and can get dirty or torn. Rear Seat Back Protectors ($69.95) provides additional protection to the seatbacks when transporting larger cargo.
A rear Cargo Net is a perfect way to securely tuck away your camping equipment, or your dogs' toys. ($55 for 2 side cargo nets, $32.95 for seat back cargo net.) A Luggage Compartment Cover ($149.95) keeps your valuables out of sight while you are on the trail and away from your car.
To keep your cargo area clean, the Cargo Tray/Trunk Tray ($69.95) protects against stains and dirt while providing a surface that helps reduce the shifting of cargo while driving. It can be easily removed for cleaning.
If you don’t want to sleep in your Subaru Forester, Crosstrek, or Outback, a rooftop tent can turn your Subaru into an outdoor venue wherever you’d like it to be. Torque News featured the 7 best rooftop tents for you, and we also researched the 7 best roof racks that offer a safe and sturdy platform for your tent. These accessories are available for all three models.
Mountain biking is one of the fastest-growing sports around the globe. You can transport your mountain bikes with a hitch-mounted bike carrier or a roof-mounted bike rack. We’ve researched them both and you can read more here.
The next two camping accessories can take your Subaru to the next level. There is a cool, easy install, camping system that includes a cooking stove, water source, and folding bed frame and mattress. You can check out three different systems here.
The last item is having an in-car fridge unit to keep your food fresh and cold. We’ve done the research and here are the 8 best In-Car Fridge Units for your Subaru Crosstrek, Forester or Outback. Happy camping and happy 4th of July!
