My Mom’s Subaru Outback Was Hit, and It Rolled 3 Times With Her Husband, His 88-Year-Old Mother, and Their 5 Lb Dog Inside, and They All Walked Away

Have you ever recommended a car to someone in your family and had it save their life? It happened to Ashley when her family was driving in a 2022 Subaru Outback and was hit by a truck. Here is Ashley's remarkable story.

My mom's Subaru Outback saved my family's lives.

Ashley from Ontario, Canada, says that the Subaru Outback that her mom was in along with her husband, his 88-year-old mother, and their 5-lb dog was hit by a truck so hard that it flipped the car and rolled three times.

Despite the severity of the impact, the Outback's safety features, including its airbags and sturdy construction, protected the occupants.

When you see the aftermath of the accident, the Outback is barely recognizable, revealing the sheer force of the impact. Yet, miraculously, Ashley's family emerged unscathed, a testament to the Outback's safety.

Picture yourself recommending the Subaru Outback to your mom. You've read that it's one of the safest vehicles on the road and told her about it. She bought the car two years ago at your recommendation. Now, it saved your family's lives.

Ashely says, "I'm writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible safety features of your vehicles. Recently, my mother, her husband, his 88-year-old mother, and their 5 lb dog were involved in a severe car accident, and thanks to the design and engineering of their Subaru, they all walked away with minimal injuries."

A Truck Slams Into the Subaru Outback

"A truck lost control on the highway going from California to Arizona and crashed into them, causing their car to roll over three times. Their Subaru, even after all the damage, recognized it was in an accident and dispatched 911 to the scene. I genuinely believe that the safety measures in place saved their life."

"The crash's impact was devastating, but their Outback held up remarkably well, protecting them in ways I never imagined a car could. It is a comfort knowing that they were driving a vehicle that prioritizes the well-being of its passengers above all else."

2022 Subaru Outback after a crashHow Safe is the Subaru Outback?

In 2022, I wrote a report titled; The 2022 Subaru Outback Is The Best Midsize Car In the New IIHS Side Crash Test.

Here's how the Outback outperformed all other midsize cars.

In 2022, the IIHS subjected seven midsize cars to a rigorous side crash test. Only one model, the 2022 Subaru Outback, emerged with the highest 'Good' rating, a testament to its superior safety.

The Hyundai Sonata and Volkswagen Jetta received Acceptable scores, the Honda Accord got a Marginal rating, and the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and Chevrolet Malibu received Poor ratings.

Why did the Outback get the highest possible rating?

The IIHS believes one reason could be the Outback's higher ride height, which gives it an advantage. "With vehicles that sit lower to the ground, the striking barrier hits higher on the door panel," says IIHS President David Harkey.

"That potentially puts sedans and wagons at a disadvantage in this evaluation but reflects what happens in a real-world crash when a higher-riding pickup or SUV strikes these vehicles."

Ashley's family was hit by a larger truck, but the Outback kept her family safe.

They All Walked Away

The Subaru Outback has a ride height of 8.7 inches, higher than a sedan, and sits taller than most midsize SUVs. The IIHS says head-protecting airbags for the driver and rear passenger performed well in the Outback, Sonata, and Jetta, "contributing to a low risk of head and neck injuries for occupants in both seating positions."

Jennifer Stockburger, director of operations at Consumer Reports Auto Test Center, says,

"The new test means we all have new information about models that may provide additional protection in these types of side impact crashes, and those future models will likely incorporate improvements that make them even better. We will all benefit from those improvements, and we look to organizations like IIHS to continue to drive them."

The new IIHS side crash test reveals the Subaru Outback is the safest new midsize vehicle customers can buy. Ashley is thankful her family was riding in an Outback when they were struck by a truck.

Ashley Thanks Subaru for Building Safe Cars

"From the bottom of my heart, thank you for creating such an incredibly safe car. My family is forever grateful for the peace of mind that comes with knowing my loved ones were in a Subaru when this happened."

Joe Young, a spokesman for the IIHS, says,

"We expect to see continued improvements with the rollout of this new test. These new ratings certainly reflect the challenge posed by the new test configuration, but, as the Subaru Outback demonstrates, good side protection is achievable for this vehicle class."

My wife was rear ended in her Subaru Legacy by a man in a GMC Sierra 2500. She was stopped in traffic and the guy said the sun was in his eyes and never saw the traffic. His cruise control was on at 75 and he never even hit the brakes. She walked away with some serious whiplash and a concussion. That car saved her life 100 percent. Her car and the three in front of her were wrecked. I recommend a Subaru to every important person in my life and show them the pictures. Of course I drive a GMC 3500 lol

I bought one of these because it bugged me that my Sienna had so little ground clearance and I had to forgo the AWD version in order to tow a modest utility trailer - and its purchase had been a nightmare given the salesperson's mistake (he lost the order), his lack of product knowledge, and Toyota's shaky response to my complaints of same. All that said, my 2016 Sienna did provide lots of space, but I no longer needed that.

So I replaced it w/ an Outback that the dealer raised another 1.5". Plenty of ground clearance and the turbo has punch. Unfortunately, the towing requires premium gas and brakes on the trailer, and the turbo gets only slightly better MPG than the Sienna.

I was involved in a significant car accident in 2022 with my 2020 Subaru. A GMC Yukon came barreling up behind me at a red light, hit the car immediately behind me, which had already recognized the threat and started to move from the lane we were both in. The Yukon then flipped and crash down onto the back of my Outback. I, who was oblivious to the threat previously, was unexpectedly jolted, but otherwise unharmed.
When my Subaru was pronounced totaled, I immediately bought another Outback. Best cars on the road, in my opinion.

I was hit by a BMW in an XV (Crosstrek) in the passengers side when the BMW jumped the traffic lights. It pushed the XV sideways. The car was still drivable after and I was unscathed. After having Volvo’s for many years I was impressed by how robust Subaru was. Since then I have had another one.

My ‘07 Impreza saved me in a terrible accident, where I walked away with only a sore knee. I collided so hard, the engine block was pushed back. I am so grateful for Subaru, & purchased an Outback shortly after that. I tell everyone about that day. I will be a Subaru person for life. Thank you Subaru

I was hit from behind by a much larger vehicle. They were going 65 and I was stopped at a stop light. Sounded like a bomb went off and I blacked out. When I came to everything was crazy. The entire back windows blew out and the rear floor was pushed up like a volcano. But I was able to walk away with 1 cut in my shin. People in cars around me could not believe I was out walking around my car taking pictures!! The ppl that hit me were taken in ambulance. Because I always leave a car length between me and other cars (I was UPS driver for 10 yrs ) and the brakes that engage on vehicle. I didn’t hit another car or guardrail. Amazing! That car was my 3rd Outback. And YES!!I bought another one!!! Besides being great in snow the safety features are awesome!!! Hoping this is my forever car!! I have great pics if you re interested!

My son was involved in a head on collision with a delivery truck. The impact was so fierce the car battery ended up in the woods somewhere. My son had broken glasses, a loose tooth and a small cut on his hand. I arrived in tears but was immediately relieved to see him walk away.

I was t-boned by a speeding pickup truck in my older Legacy wagon. I came away with a few bumps and bruises. The car was a write off.
More recently, I had just sold my 2007 Impreza to a woman who hit black ice on the highway, lost control and rolled 3 times. She walked away.
I now own my 4th Subaru.

My wife's 2016 Crosstrek was t boned at an intersection by a driver going the wrong way on a one way street. He hit her going about 30 miles an hour. There's no stop sign when you're going the wrong way on a one way street!! He hit her on the passenger side, & pushed her across the intersection totaling her Crosstrek. Every air bag went off. She suffered an injury to her right hand. She credits God, & Subaru with saving her life. I bought her a new 2024 Forester.
