BMW has confirmed the next-gen BMW 3 Series will be built in Mexico. What will this mean for consumers?
The next-generation BMW 3 series will be coming from a new plant in Mexico. The Bavarian automaker confirmed the new 3 Series will be rolling off the assembly line as soon as 2019. BMW just started construction on the new plant which will be located in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi. What will it mean for consumers in the U.S.?
2 ways consumers will benefit
The BMW 3 Series is exported from their factory in Germany now. Most of the new BMW 3 Series will be exported to the U.S. from Mexico when the new plant comes online. Consumers in the U.S. will see shorter delivery times for the next-gen model. Expanding its production footprint will also help BMW hedge against currency fluctuations which will help them hold a line on pricing, another benefit for U.S. 3 Series buyers.
The new BMW plant in Mexico will be a state-of-the-art facility and it will comprise a body shop, paint shop, and assembly line. It will be characterized by an innovative production system and comprehensive sustainability standards. BMW says they will invest around 1 billion dollars into the new plant. 1,500 new workers will be hired to build the cars for BMW.
3 Series is getting a redesign
The next-generation 3 series has been spied testing in Germany and will use BMW’s CLAR modular architecture. Spy photos reveal the compact sedan will take styling cues from the redesigned 7 series flagship sedan and have take on a sleeker look than the current model. It is expected to have semiautonomous driving features and improved handling and stability.
The Bavarian automaker will start building its best-selling model, the BMW 3 Series Sedan in 2019. BMW says they will be able to produce up to 150,000 new 3 Series cars annually. U.S. buyers will benefit with shorter delivery times and stable pricing. Look for the redesigned BMW 3 Series models to arrive sometime in 2019.
