The 2014 Subaru BRZ GT300 started in the pole position and finished in second place for their first podium of the season.
The 2014 Subaru BRZ GT300 race car was super fast this weekend and the Subaru team qualified in first place for the first time this season. They started the race in the pole position at Autopolis of Hita, Oita Prefecture in Japan for the race on Sunday. The team finished on the podium, but it was a disappointing second place. The team felt they should have won the race.
It was a great day for racing the BRZ GT300 as they weather was perfect and the crowd of 24,400 were buzzing with excitement before the race started. Driver Kota Sasaki started the race in the pole position and pushed hard from the starting flag. He expanded his lead gradually against the GT3 field.
BRZ GT300 leads the field
The 2014 Subaru BRZ GT300 went on to lead the entire field until the car used up the tires and came in on lap 29 for a tire change. They also switched drivers and Iguchi took over at the wheel. But as the BRZ was heading out of the pits, the Honda CR-Z #55 car kept the Subaru car from gaining full speed and it cost the team as they re-entered the race. The #55 CR-Z was able to capture the lead.
In the second half of the race, there was an accident and the caution flag came out and the safety car came out. After the race resumed, the Honda CR-Z #55 kept the lead and the BRZ GT300 was not able to overtake the car and the Subaru finished in second place. It’s the first podium finish for the team, but they were disappointed they didn’t come home with a first place finish.
After the race, Sasaki said, “It is frustrating indeed, but the car was perfect, and the performance and speed of the BRZ was fantastic until we used up the tires. It was shame we did not win, but we feel positive going into the next race. We were able to show all our fans the speed of the new Subaru BRZ and the changes we made paid off.”
BRZ GT300 finished 25 seconds behind the leader
The ARTA CR-Z GT #55 was the winner of the race with a time of 2:00 20.424. The 2014 Subaru BRZ GT300 finished just 25 seconds behind the Honda for the second place finish. Tatsumi Eiji STI general manager said, “I’m sorry we couldn’t bring home a victory, but we know the orientation of the car is where we want it. We can’t wait for another chance at SUGO which is next.”
